Joey, I have a 10 wk old female GSD with same issue. Frawley says they can go 8 hours without water, so I abide by the rule not to give them water at night. If she gets some from a puddle, so be it.
Can anyone tell me how to post a message of my own? I am a new member and don't see an icon for that.

Hi, everyone. I am a new member and I can't figure out how to post an email, so I don't know if this is coming as a reply to someone else's questions.
I have a ten week old GSD female. I have been taking her on leashed walks. It took her about 1 week to get over being on the leash, but now she tries to eat things along the way (rocks, leaves). I washed Frawley's video Dog Obedience video last night and learned about Ouch corrections and not giving corrections until you are 110% sure the dog knows she is doing something wrong. Prior to hearing this, I was correcting my puppy by pulling on the leash when I saw she was going for a rock and saying "No, yuck". If I didn't catch her in time, I would stop and pull the rock or leaf out of her mouth and say "Yuck". Needless to say, this results in numerous interruptions of the walk. I am trying to figure out what I should do. I even adjusted the walk schedule to do it after she eats, thinking she was hungry, but that didn't matter. Advice?

If you go to the main part of the General Dog Conversation forum and click on 'New Topic' you can post as your own topic rather than as a reply to an unrelated topic.
Your pup is 10 weeks old, and still exploring and learning about the world. I wouldn't worry about structured walks at this point - just my opinion, but at that age, when you go out, it should be more of a brief exploration (you also obviously don't want to over-exercise). I let my pup for months explore as much as he wanted when we were out. I didn't let him eat what he wanted, which meant being right there with him and either removing things before he could grab them or taking them away once he had. I think puppies, like human babies, like to stick things in their mouths as a way of experiencing them or learning about them. It's normal, and I don't think is related to hunger at all.
Joey, I found w/my puppy that he got used to not drinking water at night. He definitely would be thirsty in the morning, which was a little weird for me, but it did work out okay.
Teagan!

I would not allow this.

Thanks, Jennifer. I assume you do this "exploration" on a leash since Frawley says to never let them off? Also, how do you get your dog exercise without walking but also keeping on a leash?

Joey: My personal opinion is I do not withhold water from any animal. (unless it is prior to surgery). Many will disagree with me and I should also point out that I do not mind getting up in the middle of the night if my dog has to go out. (I also used the unpopular method of using wee-wee pads for the really young ones and did not start housebreaking until 3 1/2 months of age. Most people like to start housebreaking right away). My dogs all have water in their crates at all times, even overnight. My baby puppies stayed in an ex pen so they didn't have to pee in their beds.
With young puppies, if you allow them to have water, they *will* have to pee at night. That is a fact. Their bladders are not big enough to hold it in for 8 hours while you sleep. Personally, I understood this and was willing to use wee wee pads and get up in the middle of the night. It depends on what you are willing to do and how you want to train.
The point is do what you feel is best for your dog.

Here (below) is the topic of this thread.
Stephanie, if you would start a new thread, then we will not be hijacking this one. Go ahead and re-post any questions you like, but in a new thread. Thanks.

Panting could be a lot of different things. How old is the pup?
