hello,
I am not exactly new to the board, but I thought I would formally introduce my self. My name is Claire, but I do not have a dog. I have been reading every thing I can about dogs and I cann't wait to get my first dog this summer. I thank everyone here for all the advice.

I don't know yet. I like malinois and I like doberman, but I think I will get a mutt from the shelter. I want to do schutzhund some day, but not with my first dog.

And good for you that you are preparing by doing research! If only everyone did!
Claire, are you going to rescue a Malinois or Dobermann? Or just a nice mixed breed? Just wondering. All of my dogs are rescues (one purebred and the rest mixed) and they are great dogs.
Any dog would be lucky to get a great home with an owner who is putting the time in to research. I see you are probably looking for a sailing partner!

No, my dad said no dogs on the boat, but we will be getting home this summer and I cam get a dog after we move back into the house. I haven't decided on the exact breed of dog yet, just about any big happy dog will do.
No, I'm not worried about pirates. We have already been through the Red Sea. I am in Chile now, which has not been known for pirates, and neither is the South Pacific.(that's where we are going next) Then we are going to Hawaii and finally back home to California. We are pretty safe. I appricate the concern though.
