Has anyone ever seen an Akita trained for protection work. I use to have a male Akita he was the most confident dog I have ever owned, and I have owned GSD's, bully bred's.

I have not personally seen Akitas trained for protection work, although I've heard of them being used.
The major issue with the Akita is how independant they are.
They possess a lot of great working dog qualities, but a large majority of Akitas also lack bidibility.

I've never seen one that could do the work, and I've been doing this a long time.

I was just talking to a friend about this. Why do you think that is? Too much defense?

I'm new to the working dog world, so my opinion is not based on much but I've been doing a lot of reading, on this sight and others, and my Akita , Apollo was everything I've read you would look for in a working dog strong prey drive, hard, and confident, the only thing is as a breed they're very dog agressive

Paul, how were you judging confidence, though?
(Depending on what you mean by hard, some folks may or may not like that quality in their dog. Personally, I like handler soft dogs. It makes training less of a battlefield.)

Alyssa,by confidence I mean how he would handel new situations,
sounds, and people. He never seemed scared, Like I said I 'm new to working dogs and I'm probably bais when it comes to the Akita Apollo was with my faimly for 7 years before falling to cancer
and I never had to worry about my children or my wife when I was away with him arround. Trining is a challenge with the Akita very independant,

The quality that you are describing, is what the working world would call good nerves or stability.
That is a very important quality in a working dog, for sure, but it isn't the whole package.
Ultimately, when people ask about some of the "off" breeds for sport or personal protection, you have to look at one thing.
Law Enforcement and the military primarily use two breeds of dog for their work: the German Shepherd and the Malinois.
Not out of bias, but out of track record.
They use what works best, with the highest level of consistancy.

I can't wait to start training.

Well now why waste your time with Akita questions?
Congrats on the puppy.
I recommend stocking up on bandaids, reading as much as you can on marker training, and getting sleep while you can.
