They have the most interesting nose colors..I wonder if they stay like that or change with the seasons? Or maybe it's somehow genetic since they're related.
Regardless..I wish I could take that first girl, Camila, home with me. She has a look to her that just captures me. But two pups already and it's tough enough!
I noticed recently that my GSD's nose has gone lighter just down the middle, like the dogs pictured. My GSD isn't light colored, so I wonder, just as Heather does, if it's common or if it's a crazy genetic thing.
I don't know about GSDs but my dark Red husky with blue eyes, pink lips and a red nose had really clearly defined snow nose that was a perfect stripe, I thought it was beautiful.
Yote has darker skin and black pigment on his nose and lips and does not get snow nose at all.
Dogs that have "snow nose" are normally genetically black dogs. (there are only two genes - black and liver/chocolate - of course, they can be affected by modifiers such as dilution i.e. silver - let's not go into that!). Dogs that are genetically black have black noses, eye rims and lips. (Colour genetics are a favourite of mine, since my preferred breed, the Catahoula, can be any colour or combination of colours except pure white).
Those shepherds are genetically black. The nose colour can lighten if the owners use plastic bowls or in a myriad of other circumstances. Snow nose is usually seen in (yellow) Labradors, Huskies and other lighter coloured dogs.
As for the blue eye, in the shepherd the blue eye can be caused by a mutation, by the (very rare in shepherds) piebald gene. Google "Panda Shepherd" for more info on that. The dog with the blue eye could indeed be a purebred German Shepherd.
I had no idea about plastic bowls causing snow nose, I never use them anyway because they get chewed on and nasty, but that is one more good reason not to.
I find color genetics really interesting as well, huskies can also come in every color and combination of colors.
