I have a problem with the following: "Some institutions have gone as far as to recommend JPS for puppies of any breed potentially at risk for hip dysplasia (Labrador retrievers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Golden retrievers, etc.), regardless of familial history."
HD sucks, but performing surgery on puppies that don't display any signs of it is wrong, IMO. This article (and others I found) goes on to mention that puppies who undergo JPS have to be neutered...whether they have HD or not.
"Results suggest that JPS and TPO have similar effects on hip joint conformation in dogs with moderate to severe hip dysplasia but that neither procedure eliminates the hip joint laxity characteristic of hip dysplasia or the progression of degenerative changes."
I guess my dog would have been a candidate for this procedure, given he was diagnosed so young. I would not have opted to do this procedure on him.
I have heard of it, but not done extensive research on it.
Are you considering doing the procedure?
Is your puppy from a dysplastic breeding?
Does your puppy have a Penn Hip rating? (Can be costly and will probably make the puppy sore&hellip
How does your breeder feel about the procedure being done?
Personally, unless I had a pup with a high genetic probability of having dysplasia (in this case it can be detected quite early) and had a dog with an index value of .45 or I would NOT do it.
Hi,
I am the breeder of a puppy that was taken to a vet for his 12 week vaccination and the vet wanted to xray the puppy and do this procedure. This puppy is from many generations of xrayed animals and has not shown any sign of lameness nor have any of his litter mates. The puppy owner contacted me because she said she did not feel comfortable with this vet who also almost insisted that the puppy be desexed before he is 20 weeks old. I recommended that she take her puppy to another vet who could find no reason for performing the procedure.
I am thinking of reporting the vet to the Veterinary Board but first I am going to contact him to ask why he recommended the procedure.
