I recently got into an argument at an off leash park b/c a dog was acting agressively and charging me and when I asked them to call it, they didnt, etc. etc. I have 3 dogs, one who is older but 2 who are extremely active and love to run, play and swim. I dont jog, and walks dont seem to tire them out. I am wondering what everyone else does to exercise their active dogs if they dont go to off leash parks. I feel bad that Im not able to tire them out and dont feel comfortable going back as I was told I wouldnt be welcome, oh the drama, anyway, any input would be so very much appreciated!!

Fetch with a Chuck-It (in a fenced area like an elementary school or a baseball field)
Swimming
Biking
Weight pulling
Tug
Big ball playing (Basket ball or even better a jolly ball or a hard plastic ball)
Mind games (sounds funny, but making them work mentally will tire them out too&hellip
Tug games (tire me out too!)
I do hike and in some areas do it off leash so they get a lot of hill work

Fetch with chuck-it, our fenced yard is too small for it, so I take my 3 yo GSD to the park, with her on an e-collar and a 20-ft drag line.
We walk the dogs one mile every morning, and two miles at night. On our days off, we go for longer walks/hikes.
I try to do 3 ob sessions with her daily, using the ball as a reward. We don't have any furniture in one of our living areas so I can bounce a rubber ball against the walls for her to go after. I play tug with her, too, but that tires me out too quickly
We were considering getting a treadmill at one point, but we haven't had to yet.

I feel your pain.
I like to hike with my dog off leash which requires a killer recall. Chuck-it as Jessica mentioned is an old standby too; weather permitting I like to throw into the water; swimming takes a lot of stamina and I also will throw into hilly areas which require some up and down running which also adds to the workout.
I always include a few obedience commands on our hikes as well as a search for an item I hide while he is sniffing or otherwise occupied; using the brain does tire the dog too.
As far as off leash parks; the area I hike is over 500 acres and dogs are allowed off leash. I take the most secluded trails up into the woods and with the exception of entering and exiting I usually do not run into any other hikers.
For the few minutes I need to reach the unoccupied areas; I pretty much just plow through other owners and their dogs. Not stopping or making contact seems to be the key in avoiding confrontation of the K9 and human kind.

We walk about five miles most days, some days with a ten-pound weighted vest. We also like to hike off-leash when the weather is nice and conditions permit.
We like to do 'fetch' with the Chuckit flying squirrel to get a good run in, and we're getting into LOTS of tug exercises. My dog is doing a lot of impulse-control training with the tug toys these days which he finds very mentally exhausting but thoroughly enjoyable.
We had some very challenging days when the temperature was ridiculously cold, and a couple of those days I actually resorted to playing fetch in the stairway of my building. I live on the forth floor, the stars are nice and carpeted, and nobody uses them much (we have an elevator) so it worked out pretty well, even though I only threw the ball twice out of concern for my dog.
I try to mix it up a little to keep things from getting boring, but a good walk every day seems to do my guy the most good.

My GSd is 4 months old.
We do exercise 2X a day. One walk. One bike ride. I couldnt reccomend biking with more than one, but at this age he sleeps really well. Be cautious of your pace on a bike, I am so paranoid of hip problems, nobody would ever confuse me with Lance Armstrong.
Good Luck

Thanks for the input, Im starting to think off leash parks are too risky, especially with my older dog. We do have a fenced in baseball field close by that is basically an off leash area, but I get off work early when its empty! My dogs wont swim so much as wade, ha ha. Need to find some good hiking trails. The weighted vest is an excellent idea, b/c my older dog tires long before my other 2, so if the other 2 wore one it would be an added workout. I think teaching my dogs to fetch would be a great workout as well! My one dog tracks so I could do that too! Im really excited to get started, I feel much better with these options than the off leash park anyway.

~Chuck-It
~drive game w/Orbee (GSD only)
~walking on the treadmill in the winter/walks outside in warmer weather
~Swimming (summertime)
~Find it (a game I made up, where they either have to find pieces of food or they have to find me-both are fun!)
~fetch (ball, jolly ball, frisbee, bumpers-for hunting dogs, and whatever else they are interested in that day)
