Otto did everything you said, and licked his lips, but he didn't get a treat. Same with Lily, she did what you said, but you got distracted by the cat! I also noticed you gave many markers (assuming YES is your marker) but did not treat consistently. Are you phasing out treats? I had to laugh when your three VERY CALM dogs were standing there and you said "calm down".... LOL... that was great... your dogs were playing so gently too. What nice dogs. Your Saint is getting big!

Are you phasing out treats? I didn't watch yet, but based on this, I would urge that you watch the Leerburg marker video. I know that not everyone will agree here, but I personally never ever give an empty marker. The marker always means "reward coming." And reward comes. When I phase out the rewards, then I use other verbal encouragement or simply go through a longer routine before giving the marker/reward. But I never give the marker and not follow through. Once you have loaded it, what you have loaded it to mean is "Correct! Reward coming!"

Nothing that can't be fixed, and what we are saying is NOT that you have to give food rewards every time forever --- what we are saying is that the promise of the marker needs to be reliable. And good job that the dog licks his lips, because you have charged your marker well!

But I never give the marker and not follow through. This is what I do as well. If I use my marker (either a clicker or the word "yes") then I always follow with a reward. If I don't want to reward yet, but I want to give encouragement, then I use the word "good". To me, the marker remains more powerful if it is always followed by a reward.

I didn't mean to not give treats where treats were due. It was their mealtime, so they would've done anything knowing that I had removed the food container from the fridge. Also, my hubby doesn't want me to give treats to our lab when he's doing ob. IDK why, it's just how he wants to train him(Otto is more his dog than mine). I know, I've been having a tough time getting my markers down ("yes!"). I'm a little out of practice, obviously. And it wasn't our formal ob. I normally have all but one crated and we have one-on-one ob. time. They do get distraction training too, but that's in the yard or when my hubby's home from work. We normally do a few formal ob thru the day and this was just for fun since I had the camera on. Edited by Keleah Stull (03/02/2009 05:42 PM) Edit reason: added more Keleah

Did you load a marker with food with a dog who would not get food rewards? Also, I really would be careful about the markers. That is, formal or not formal, camera or not, the marker means something. If it ceases to mean something, it ceases to be useful. You can always say something else entirely. "Good boy" with a pat, for example.

I know it sounds like I am beating this to death, but the underlying basis of training with a marker is to make that marker sacrosanct. It always mean what it means. It is not used for anything else. Once it's charged, the dog understands it to mean "reward on the way." When it falls down on that meaning, it ceases to be a marker.
