I have a 14 month old female German Shepherd she's just entering her first heat and I've noticed that she is panting ALOT... is this normal? I know it's not lack of water/thirst, or anything like that and it happens whether or not we've been playing outside. Also, is there a certain diet that I should be feeding her if she has skin issues? She gets bathed regularly, and has flea treatments and my house is flea free but this dog scratches constantly.
We had the itchy dry skin problem and switched to raw and it all went away. maybe she's getting bathed too often, that can dry out skin. fish oil is good to try. could be an allergy to an ingredient in her food.
Ok, I'm gonna try the raw diet again... we did it when she was younger... not sure why we stopped... and about the fish oil? just use the fish oil vitamins? how much?
Thank you all for the help... Now about the constant panting... I've had other dogs in the past but none of them panted like this when going in heat... I've thought about the climate getting warmer and I used a shedding brush on her, I've made sure she gets plenty of water and exercise... I've also noticed she's trying to dominate my cat more than usual and my foot (she's always had an issue with feet).

Hi Shannon,
I haven't noticed any issue with panting associated with heat cycles in my dog -- but she does get more "bossy" with my cats. I just step up "leave it" training, redirect her with treat-filled toys and make sure the cats have a "dog-free" space to retreat to.
