One of our K9s has broken a lower canine tooth about half way down. We got a price yesterday from a veterninary dentist of $2,200. This seemed a bit much to me, does anyone else have any thoughts on this price? Also, does anyone know of any "dog dentists" in VA, TN, or NC?

This is almost exactly what I paid when my dog got a root canal to repair a broken molar about a year ago. There was no cap put on - I was told that would have added another $1,000+ to the price, and the dentist didn't think it was necessary. Most people I've heard that repair canines though DO get caps, not sure what a dentist's thoughts on the different circumstances would be...

As a side note, while we didn't get the tooth capped, the resin that was applied over the root canal hole, to smooth out the tooth surface, chipped off a few months ago and I'm just saving my pennies to go back in and get THAT repaired. I was quoted about $400, plus another couple hundred if I wanted Oscar's teeth cleaned at the same time... ugh. A big chunk of all these charges is the anesthesia for the dog - the larger the dog and longer the procedure, the more anesthesia is used, and the pricier it gets. Expect to also have bloodwork done beforehand... as should be done before any procedure using anesthesia.

Sorry to hear about your dog's tooth. A root canal is a pain in the behind, but fortunately the dog will bounce right back and the only prolonged pain will really be to your wallet...

Cost for my dog was $2,400 for root canal, crown and cap...x4. Thats a pretty good price you got. My price included somewhat of a discount as well.

Holy cheapness! Depts. must get a heck of a discount! I'm waiting for the day when I get to have all of Caleb's canines titanium capped. Capped b/c he's ruined them...titanium b/c it will look wicked-cool. I will save money on anesthesia. Maybe that will make him remember for next time he's thinking of ruining his teeth.

I got a much higher quote on caps a long time ago.

Actually, our price was only about $300 bucks less per canine than John Q citizen. My Vet was in Orlando and did an awesome job. I got to peruse the Bass Pro Shop for 5 hours while my boy was under both times.

I humped no calls that day...got a road trip in the cruiser...and got a nice muzzle loader to boot. THATS what I call a good day!! LOL

Oh, and Roscoe's grill was cool too. (almost forgot)

Last month, my dog broke off one of his upper canine's about half way. Cost of the root canal and everything was $628. He's in the Pittsburgh area and one of only two specialists that I could find.

I paid $1600 three years ago for a root canal and titanium alloy cap on my GSDs broken canine. Got a discount because the veterinary dentist teaches at the same university I do....no problems since, and I am very pleased with the work. I know it's a hit to the wallet, but $2200 doesn't sound unreasonable for the whole job.
