I was looking on they're website and seen that they offer a on-line course and sounds to be a lot better then the other crap on-line courses that are out there. Does anybody think it would be a bad idea to take this course as a base and a "foot" in the door for becoming a good trainer. I not looking for it to be like actually going to one of there on-site classes or like going to Tom Rose's school ( I would die to be able to go there) I am just looking for a starting point and the info on they're site sounds promising. Hope someone can chime in and give they're opinion.
Thanks William
I understand that nothing would beat actually going down there for they're on-site training, I am just looking at it as a start to a better career and a foot in the door of the dog training world. When i have the oppertunity I plan on going to one of the 2 that are worth going to, unless I find someone to apprentice with in northeast ohio, I thought i had a chance to with someone but I did not like some of they're methods, I saw them spin a dog around in the air by a choker chain. I found out on here that its called heilocoptering.... Needless to say I thought it just looked wrong. If anyone knows anybody in northeast ohio thats willing to let me apprentice with them would be sweet.
Thanks william
Looking at it, I don't know if it would give you a lot as far as credentials, but it looks like it would be pretty interesting and if it did'nt cost too much may be something fun.
As a gradute of the intensive 4 month hands-on program, I was a little put off by the offering of this program as were many of the other students. My concern is that people will get the Certificate of Completion for the online course and claim that they are "certified" by Triple Crown.
In order to graduate from the 4 month program at TCA, you have a very intense schedule and demanding requirements. To graduate from the second half, you need a 3.7 GPA to graduate, but many of my fellow students didn't make it even past first half. It was stressful, but graduation meant something. They didn't sugar-coat it when you were doing something wrong and there was no hand-holding. There was great knowledge and solutions, feedback and examples and dogs of multiple temperaments that you were required to work with. It was a lot of hard work and a serious commitment. This just can't happen with an online course.
Of course, no one expects that from an online course. And I know that there are plenty of people that can't drop their lives (or their wallets) for 4 months to live on campus, and I am glad that there will be an online course available that was created by people that actually know what they're talking about. Perhaps these people would otherwise use Animal Behavior College's program, and I would much rather people use Triple Crown. But still...an online course is still online.
In my opinion, Triple Crown has a great reputation in the training community not just because of the accomplishments, talent and knowledge of the instructors but also because of the hard work, exposure, experiences and the sheer volume of hours students are required to spend training a variety of green dogs to do a variety of things. There were also behavior problems a-plenty that had to be worked through (for the students AND the dogs! )
I wish TCA well in this venture, I do, and I'm sure the information they present via the online course will be sound, but I hope I don't see a rash of people claiming to be "certified" from Triple Crown just because they got a Certificate of Completion for an online course. This could have the unintended consequence of cheapening TCA's repuation. Maybe not, but it could.
Being "certified" as a dog trainer doesn't always mean much to people who actually train dogs anyway, because they know that the majority of certifications come from online courses or online one-time tests! And they know that you don't need a certification if you have great experience and talent. And your average client thinks all certifications are the same anyway, and have never even heard of Triple Crown! But I do feel that the diploma and certification from TCA represents the hard work we students did as well as the accomplishments, knowledge and experience we gained while living there. There's no way any online course can match that. I'm not a fan of online courses for dog training...can you tell?
