My dog is a male standard poodle. He'll be 6 months old on March 2nd. He has all his adult teeth at this point and mouthing has basically stopped. Now he nips, pretty hard sometimes.
I redirect, give a stern NO, yelp ouch...he just gets more riled. When he doesn't stop immediately when told, I put him in his crate.
He is exercised am/pm for 45 min at a time. He gets obedience work 15-20 min a day. I have started using a pinch collar for walks (terrible puller) and solved that issue. If I leave the collar on when he's in the kitchen with us, he is an angel, the moment I take it off - psycho puppy. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Tina,
Are you using a pinch or prong collar? Sounds like your dog needs the prong collar with some corrections. It is necessary for the dog to know exactly what the command you give him means before you give the corrections. Always give the command first, followed by the correction at the level necessary. Ed Frawley's Basic Obedience DVD goes into detail on this. Setup situations where he normally nips and be ready to administer commands followed by corrections. It doesn't take long to stop that behavior.
The part of your post that troubled me is your crate use. For most purposes, the crate should NEVER be used as punishment. When you get control of the nipping problem (and you will), you may very well have a dog that will not use the crate willingly. His crate should be his "safe place" and should always be used in positive ways. Sending the dog to the crate when he misbehaves may ultimately turn him against it.
Good luck
Jerry
I received and watched the puppy 8wks-8mo this weekend, three times!!! I stopped putting him in his crate when he's naughty.
When he has the prong collar on he's an angel...no correction is even necessary anymore. I am trying now to do it without the collar as I don't want him wearing it all the time.
I started giving him a sit command and then praise as soon as he nips or trys to nip. He forgets thats what he was going to do! It really helps!
This is my first standard poodle and he just seems different than any other dog I've ever had.
My 4 moth old Dobe pup is a real cruncher, anything and everything must be tasted, nipped, and chewed on. I have been just taking it easy and he is coming along nicely, doesn't taste the children anymore, and knows the word "out". He is crated, he doesn't love the crate, but he is ok with it. I have made sure that it is never a punishment though, if I did then he would really come to despise it. My GSD was improperly crated as a pup I think, now he despises it.
If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn't thinking.
