It is that time of year where we all suffer with mosquitoes. I was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion for a safe mosquito repellant. I have heard of an Avon product that is not sold for this use, but works well at repelling, has anyone heard about this or used it? Also, I have used Burt's Bees natural insect repellant which my dogs hate.
I have heard good things about Whup-a-bug, since it is all natural, but have not had a chance to try it out yet. I do plan on ordering some, however, and giving it a shot this spring!
Cactus Juice is another natural product. I have used it at times, and it it effective. Not sure for heavy mosquito activity how well it would work though...
It is available with and without sunblock...it smells good and is not oily... Cactus Juice
Avon Skin So Soft.... REEEKS. I can't imagine any dog (or even human) putting up with it. It smells as bad as bug spray.
I have actually used DEET (childrens' bug repellant) on an old dog, but she was physically incapable of licking it off. I would not put anything chemical on a dog who even might be able to taste it.
I have heard of cedar oil spray being used to repel almost anything with six legs. But! I've heard in places that cedar oil can be toxic to dogs.... never been able to substantiate it with actual studies one way or the other. I have talked to someone who swears by it for fleas on her dog. They use it for sand flies in iraq too. Don't know the long term risks.
Never heard of cactus juice being used... probably would be pretty non toxic I would imagine... does it attract bees? LOL.
Catnip essential oil works really well, as does cedar and lavender.
you have to make sure you get the pure essential oils and then dilute them into pure grain alcohol or light olive oil/safflower/almond oils.
I do 3 drops catnip, 2 drops lavender and 1 small drop cedar per two ounces of everclear and put it in a sturdy PET or glass spray bottle...the oils will eat through HDPE plastic.
Vodka works well in a pinch but will cloud and separate some.
I then lightly spritz on their back before they go outside in the yard.
Diluting in oil works too I double the amount of drops per ounce of oil and put a couple of drops on their collar and/or leash.
Disclaimer: I have found through research that these oils are safe to use in very small amounts on healthy dogs, I would not use on old, very young or dogs with any sort of illness.
And never ever use essential oils on cats!!!
Hi Jennifer, I picked up the Catnip and Lavendar oils last fall and was going to give them a try this summer. Do I need the Cedar oil for it to work? Do you spray it on everytime they go out?
