Hi All,
I hope you can help. My little 3.8 lb, 11 1/2 week old puppy swallowed my gold ball earring. The ball itself is a little less than 1/2 an inch and the needle post is 3/8. She was excited to see me bit my ear and grabbed it right off. The clasp she did NOT swallow, luckily. I asked my vet and she said to give her lots of bread and cream and watch her poop. Any suggestions otherwise, would greatly be appreciated.

Bread is great for anything with sharp edges...earrings, glass, etc.

And if she refuses bread, post back.
Also post back when it comes out, and we can forestall any bread-related constipation later.

Thanks ladies.
Marisa just went to the store to buy bread (we don't eat white bread). Kenzie seems fine; no apparent discomfort, as active as ever. I doubt she will refuse the bread. She is an absolute chow hound. In any event, we will let you know.

Should we feed her only bread until she passes it or should we feed some meat as well?
My concern is about the post part of the earring. It is thin and sharp. I'm worried it might perforate her digestive track or create some blockage. Are there any signs for which we should be watching until it passes?

Hello All,
Thank you so much for the suggestions. I bought some cream and white bread. The chow hound that Kenzie is, she ate it right up. I gave her the cream and bread mix 1st, than a little of her usual lunch of raw mix(I hope that was ok). She ate that up too...and than looked at me, like that's it? No more food? After that she went sniffing around the yard and picked up dirt, grass, rocks(she spit the rocks out), but gosh, puppies are like hoover vacuum cleaners, they pick up anything and everything on the ground. I will definitely keep you posted when she poops. How long should I give her the cream and bread? Thank you again for all your replies.

We actually nicknamed Falcon "hoover" when we first brought him home because he also SCARFED up anything loose on the ground... rocks, pieces of asphalt off the driveway, etc... It was a concern, but only took a few weeks of "YUCK!" and pulling something out of his mouth for him to realize it was more hassle than it was worth.
Keep us posted on your sweetie...

Hello All,
Ok, it's a new day, she had 2 good solid poops, one last night and one this morning, but she has not passed the earring yet. Do you know how long it will take for her to pass the earring???? Also, I'm about to give her breakfast, so do I still give her the bread and cream or just her raw mix. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thank you.

Marisa, from past experience, I would give it 36 to 48 hours...
I think the bread remedy would work when given immediately after the object was swallowed; I don't think it will make any difference at this stage of the game...
