My boyfriend and I adopted a shephard mix puppy from the Humane Society. We bought Apache when he was about 8 weeks. He is now almost 4 months. We both wanted to get a dog to keep me company while he was deployed. At first he was cute, very quickly he turned into a nipping terror. I couldn't even walk through the house without him biting at me. After giving him more exercise and some play dates with my friends dog he mellowed out a lot. I got a prong collar which helped too. I really don't use the prong collar anymore. I've been using time outs and sound diversion and that helps a little too but he still gets his little attitudes especially when we are about to bring him in or outside. Any other suggestions of what might help. Will he grow out of it?
Haha you think it's bad now. Wait until he is teething! he sounds like a completely normal, healthy puppy.
You need to arm yourself with lots of dog toys. Some in every room. When he gets excited and playful, redirect him onto a toy. He will learn (in time) that toys and not skin are for biting.
Do a search on the forum, this is a very common question and there have been some good ideas posted. More exercise was a great start.
Thanks Angela! We have tons of toys but I get frustrated with him. When I take the leash off of him he thinks I'm playing and bites at me and or the leash. I think I need my own personal live in trainer lol. I have so many questions and concerns. I just want Apache to be a good dog and protect me while my boyfriend is away. Oh he also likes to eat every bug or leaf in sight. Any suggestions for that. I tried Yuck but it really doesn't work.
If the leash thing is really bugging you, there are two options.
You could try sour apple spray on the leash, or invest in a chain leash (Herm-Sprenger makes some nice ones).
Confucious say, dog on leash cannot eat bugs or leaves.
Don't let puppies off leash, even in a fenced yard...
Even in the house.
If you are not training with markers (clicker training), now is a great time to begin. It will improve your bond with the pup and give you a way of distracting him when he's being a terror!
Good luck...
PS, is your pup crate-trained? what do you mean by 'sound diversion?'
I did start the clicker training when we went for walks and that helped him stay by me and stop pulling. I was kind of confused about how to do the training properly so I stopped. Well I guess you could say he is crate-trained. He usually is quiet in his crate and doesn't relieve himself in it. Sound diversion- If he is biting me my boyfriend will hit two pots together to startled him. He stops then I praise him for stopping.
I that does make sense. But it seems like it more than just mouthiness to me.I had to stop wearing my robe outside because he'll jump up and bite and hang on to it. It doesn't seem like playful mouthing.
