I noticed an upper canine tooth is chipped off the top. I am concerned because I can see a small brownish dot on the tip of it. I cannot tell if it is bothering him.
What should I do? He needs a cleaning anyway. I got quotes from my vet and other vets, and asked them about the tooth and they said they only extract broken teeth. Being that he is only 2 years old and it is a small chip, that is not really an option. I called a vet dentist and they gave me quote for cleaning, which is way higher than vet (800 vs 400), and quote for if he needed root canal (1500).
What would you all do?
How can I tell if it is bothering him or if it is root exposed and not just dirt...
Thanks!

Also, I wanted to note that the chips is very small, but enough to make the tip look blunt instead of curved. The dot I see is very small.
Thanks

I would get a consult with the dentist (not the general vet) - the dentist will be able to tell how bad the chip is, and whether it warrants a root canal. If so, the cleaning can happen at the same time as the root canal - if not, the cleaning can happen independently, whenever you want to schedule it. It doesn't sound like too much of the tooth is broken off, and sometimes you can see a little darkening in the center without the pulp actually being exposed, but you'll really want to have a specialist determine the damage (if any).
My dog has a number of chipped teeth, but it was pretty obvious when he actually broke one of his molars badly enough to warrant a root canal - the exposed pulp was about the diameter of a ball point pen tip, and it was dark brown.
Are you sure this is a chip and not natural wear? I know he's young, but some dogs have habits like chewing rocks, which will easily wear down sharp teeth...

Well I think it happened from him chewing a marrow bone. It could be wear but it concerns me that I am seeing the small dot in the center. Again it is very small wear/chip and i am wondering if it is dentin that I am seeing. I will call the dentist vet to see how much a consult is. If he says it is nothing I may take him to regular vet to have cleaning done since it is about 600$ cheaper.

Keith, you may not be able to tell if it bothers him or not, as many dogs have a high tolerance for pain.
I am with Natalya on this one and have a dentist look at this, especially because he is so young.
If the pulp is exposed, it possibly could become infected and lead to a worse problem.

Story -
I noticed my older dog (8years) had the same thing awhile back - both his bottom canines tips were broke off- and I could see a brown spot in the middle - I even posted on here about it because I was worried his pulp was exposed. I took him to the vet and they were not broke down far enough for the pulp to be exposed- the vet said it usually has to be broke down about 1/2 way? but I felt better getting it checked out- the weird part about it was when I got home I checked my other dogs teeth (3yrs old) and they were the same way - both broke off and the top ones too- I've come to the conclusion its from playing with their plastic Jolly balls - they have holes all over in them from biting them and sometimes the balls get stuck in their mouth because of it - Sampson my youngest (18mo) canines arent chipped but he only plays with ultra balls go figure - but I would get them checked to make sure.....

Good news, I found a vet that will give me a free dental exam. She also trained under the dentists that my vet referred me to. She does all of the procedures at her office, which is about 45 mins from my house, but is able to do root canals etc. I have an appointment to see her on Thursday. I will let you all know the outcome.
Thanks!

Please post back with the price.
If I read this correctly, you are saying that $600 (six hundred dollars) is the price for teeth cleaning.
I've had dogs teeth cleaned for about $50 for years.
I am missing something here?

I feel certain that you don't mean full-blown cleaning. x-rays, etc., with anesthesia, Nora.

That's great, but "free" doesn't mean x-rays too, right, if necessary?
BTW, if you end up needing just cleaning, I'd probably shop around a bit from the $800.
I just had my little senior done on their "winter dental work-up special" (which is possibly common, from the big signs I saw at two local dentists in February). The cleaning part (he needed an extraction too, and a mass removed from his eyelid), including the anesthesia (the best available for bracheocephalic dogs, and the pre-anesthesia testing, a staff person person there dedicated for BP monitoring, an IV catheter in place), etc., was just under $300.
Just under $400 would be "not on sale" at my vet. That would still be in line with what I found when I called around.
