Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some advice on allergies. I have a Siberian mix that just started with allergies on her muzzle about a month ago. The anithistamines didn't make a dent so I started with homeopathic remedies and herbs-echinacea and milk thistle. She has shown some improvement but her muzzle is still quite pink and she still itches. She has been raw fed now for about 3 years (she's about 3 and a half years old)and I have only vaccinated her once. I rotate the following meats: chicken, beef, fish, lamb, turkey. I used to include pork in that list but I suspected that she may have been reacting to pork. She gets omega 3 supplements, molecularly distilled. I give her a veggie puree every day as well, just about half a cup (I find that the veggies makes her stool less hard) which includes: carrots, lettuce, pumpkin, celery, zuchini, parsley. (maybe she's reacting to the veggies) Allergies are so complicated because she could be reacting to something in the environment or her diet. I don't use any harsh household cleaners just plain water on my floors, no pesticides in my garden either. She gets regular exercise every day and I have other dogs that she plays with so I don't think its a stress thing. Well I was hoping for some further insights if anyone had any. Thanks.

Who diagnosed allergies? How are the paws and ears? Is she face-rubbing? Has there been a scraping (lifting of cells) of the muzzle skin? Is she inflamed? No scratching elsewhere?
Which antihistamines?
Food is the least likely culprit here, from this info.
P.S/ Yes, you will find this to be a very allergy-knowledgeable board.

Welcome to the board and ditto what Connie said. I, too, am experiencing allergies with my dog.
There is a wealth of info here and many wonderful, experienced people.
I did a search the other day using the word 'allergies' and came up with hundreds of posts in the past 12 months.
Good luck.

I have taken her to two vets regarding the allergies. The first did a skin scrape, no bugs or fungus. That's when I started the antihistamines (Clorfenamina) but after not seeing any improvement I called a holistic vet that put her on the homeopathy. Paws and ears are fine. Slight rash on her belly at first but that is all gone now. She face rubs and scratches so I have to be on top of that but its much less now than when she started with the allergy. She was very inflamed at first but is much better now but the skin is still red, no hair has grown back yet. When she comes back from her walk its always much redder and irritated but I just walk her on the sidewalk, we don't go to parks, I think it is the heat, we're still with summerlike temperatures over here (Chile). Maybe I just need to give her more time, does it normally take this long for an allergic response to reverse?

Where else does she scratch besides face?
Do you rinse airborne allergens (pollen, etc.) off of her after walks?
I'm just trying to get a feel for where you are in the process.
Allergies don't reverse, but are -- we hope -- controlled. And no, time isn't a factor as much as getting the allergens away from her while controlling inflammation.
Do you know to vacuum, throw away the bag, then launder her bed/mat, and bathe her?

She just scratches her face. I haven't rinsed off after walks but I have started cooling down the area with cold cloths, I will start to rinse and see if that makes a difference. She never has tolerated the heat well being part Siberian and all. The vaccuming and laundering I have been doing on a regular basis. How come she just started with this, she has lived here for the last three years...could this be an immunity problem? The holistic vet said she could have lupus (

I'm just curious what kind of muzzle are you using? Is it quite comfortable on her? If it is related to allergies, maybe you can find out what does it make of. Maybe try find something that is leather or something else.

I haven't met dogs who had lupus, but I have met several people who had lupus. The illness is very devastating.

Lindsay, the "muzzle" meant the dog's muzzle (that area of the dog's face).
