This is my first post as well as being a novice to schutzhund. So I will attempt to make this question as clear and concise as I can. I've been working my 7Mo. old Gsd on a back tie with a puppy tug as per "The first steps of bite training" vid. At the club I train with, the helper has got him on to a puppy sleeve. My question is should I continue to play with him at home with the tug or should I switch to a puppy sleeve? playing the game in the same manner.
I don't remember exactly why Noel, and it could have been something specific to my dog and what the trainer was trying to work on with him at that time but we did have a period of not using anything but a sleeve.

I would say unless your helper says otherwise, stick with the tug. The thing to be mindful of is not to inadvertently pressure the dog into defense, which is actually a very easy thing to do, without even realizing it, and as I'm sure you are aware, it is a bad idea because of the conflict that creates between you and the dog.
I'm very carefull and aware of putting any type of pressure on him, and I certainly would not put my own dog into a defensive posistion. Now, obviously I wouldn't be putting the sleeve on, just using it on the end of a line as if it were the tug. keeping the prey item consistent essentially.
Noel,
Work with your helper/trainer director. Sleeve, tug whatever on the end of a line (shrug), I'm not sure it matters much to the dog.
But everyone getting on the same page enre to you, the dog, and the helper is important. If you're going to change anything, the director is the person to talk to, that way the next time he sees the dog he'll also be able to tell you what is working and what isn't or help you do it properly.
Communicate with the helper/trainer. It's key.

Ok, I know it's been while to repost on this thread but I would like some more opinions. The helper at my club did really not have an answer or an opinion on the backtie question. So I went to another club that a friend trains at to have the director help me out and evaluate my pup. Essentially he said I should never put my dog in drive at home especially with a tug. He should not be biting a puppy sleeve and should be only worked with a bite pillow. putting him into drive at home will reduce his drive for when we get to the field. I agree with him after he layed it out for me. This is opposite of what I've learned from the DVD's I've watched.
