My 3yo dog has exhibited allergies since I adopted him at 8mo. Never get terribly bad and I use holistic methods and he is on a raw diet. Anyway, I am pretty sure he is allergic to salmon and salmon oil and perhaps all fish/fish oils. For now he is on a strict raw turkey (Primal grind) and vegetables with some other odds and ends that I know don't seem to bother him (yogurt for instance). I was wondering whatever form of omega 3 oil I could use. I am hesitant to use flax plus have read its not well utilized by dogs. How about coconut oil, do you all recommend that? Hemp oil? For now I am using sesame oil which doesn't seem to bother him but I realize its not a good source of omega 3. Thanks for input

I have had really good success with both fish oil and hemp seed oil. I would stay away from the coconut oil. I also alternate with fish oil. I only use the best human grade oils out there. Arctic Omega makes a really good fish oil, Barlene's make a really good organic cold pressed flax seed oil. Hope this helps.

Why do you think he is allergic to fish oil? (Why do you think he has a food allergy?)
What about krill oil? It's supposed to be even better than fish oil (longer shelf life, more "potent", etc.). I know it is more expensive, but supposedly you get more bang for the buck. I've never tried it, but have just heard folks talking about it.

When I researched it for my daughter months ago, I found many red flags. But that was then and this is now, so if anyone has new stuff, I'd love to read it.
Krill contains the same omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish oil, only in krill oil they are hooked up in a double chain phospholipid structure. The fats in our own cell walls are in the phospholipid form.
Krill oil contains an antioxidant called astaxanthin which isn't found in fish oil. Adding an antioxidant to the existing benefits of fish oil is generally considered a positive difference.
Krill also has Vitamin D and Vitamin A which can't be found in fish oil.
However,
Krill oil is considerably more expensive than fish oil at the current time which means that you would be spending more money without yet knowing if the benefits are substantial. (there hasn't been a lot of research done on the benefits of it)
Krill is rapidly becoming extinct so consuming it for its oil isn't good for the environment.
Fish oil contains higher levels of the important omega-3 fatty acids and therefore is more likely to have the desired effects.
I just compiled all this info in the span of 5 mins or so. Certainly a person would have to do more reading to figure out if it's something they would want to pursue giving to their dogs. It might be something to investigate if an allergy to fish oil was confirmed.
