Are all shampoos pretty much the same? If not, what should I look for? We live in the Northwest and it's so different from where we used to live in Texas! I should mention that the shampoo will be used on a puppy. Should we use something different when he gets older?
I know that the first one mentions benefits for dogs with skin problems, but it's the soothing gentle kind (not the kind with strong stuff like salicylic acid), and when I bought it for a dog who had skin stuff going on as we worked with his allergies, I liked it so much that I started using it for the others.

Be sure not to use shampoos for humans -- not even for babies. They are the wrong pH for dogs.
I always use a natural shampoo with soothing products like aloe or oatmeal.
I once had my dog groomed at a vocational school (where they teach high school kids real trades since most are not going to college) and they left too much shampoo on his back or didn't rinse it out fully.
Whatever it was he had a HORRIBLE rash/puss bumps and would whine/lay down anytime your hands got anywhere near his back. He was in a LOT of pain. It took a month or two of benadryl and bi-weekly soothing washes to clear that up. I KNOW that would not have happened had they used a non-chemical shampoo like I use now.
In addition, my groomer recommends no leave in conditioners for my dogs coat (gsd/husky) Not sure what you have, but I think that is a good rule of thumb.
No, not all shampoos are the same, and I would trust most things sold here at leerburg, as the products are tested, and evaluated rather than selling what is quick and easy.
Weather isn't a major concern in selecting a dog's shampoo.
Larger concerns are the ingredients in the shampoo (harsh chemicals, unnecessary perfumes, etc), and the dog's coat type.
Right now my husband's job has us in Utah, a little south of SLC. We hope to be moving up around Spokane WA in the next year or two.
Another question, are there strong opinions on pet insurance? We have been out of the pet loop for too many years and there have been so many changes!
If you are going to get pet insurance, do it as early as possible.
Any prior vet visits = preexisting (and thus, uninsured) condition.
I have heard both good and bad. It depends on your dog, frankly.
Some dogs are rather prone to accidents, mishaps and illnesses, and the insurance pays for itself in one visit.
A fellow club member has gotten terrific use out of his insurance, due to serious dental problems in his dog. One dental surgery alone essentially led to the insurance paying for itself. The amount the company paid out for treatment far surpassed the amount he'd paid in two years of premiums.
