The wonderfully handsome GSD in my signature photo, and the center of my world, bloated on Saturday night.
I'm thankful that I had a little bit of understanding of what was happening and rushed him to the emergency clinic, where he underwent surgery to correct the torsion. The stomach and spleen appeared healthy, but the pressure from the bloat ruptured several stomach arteries and there was a lot of internal bleeding. A blood transfusion saved his life, but he's still not out of the woods.
Two favors I'd like to ask. Please take a moment to look at Luca's picture, and then send him some good wishes and healing energy. If you're a praying person, we're accepting those too.
And please consider volunteering your healthy dog for blood donation at your local canine blood bank. Someone I'll never meet saved my dog this weekend. I hope someday to be able to repay them.
Tracy,
I send my thoughts and prayers your way for Luca as well as for you and your lovely family.
So glad to hear that you got him in when you did. It sounds like he is in excellent hands.
Thanks for the suggestion to donate blood, it is something I honestly never thought about until now.
Please keep us posted on Luca, again, thinking and praying for you!
I'm so sorry Tracy - what a terrifying thing. But I'm glad Luca sounds like he'll eventually be alright. Thank you for posting your experience, and pointing out the importance of canine blood donors - I confess, I don't think I was really aware, but obviously, it's no less a life saving a gift than that of a human blood donor...
Best wishes to Luca, and hugs to you waiting out his full recovery.
So sorry to hear what happened and it's a great thing knowing about things such as this beforehand. I give my hopes that he'll pull through and he'll be in my thoughts.
Thanks for the info on blood, I didn't even really know you could do that.
Tracy, you and Luca both will certainly be in our thoughts.
I will talk with my vet about possibly donating blood.
As it is, I often am frustrated by my own inability to donate blood (cannot do so because I lived in Europe during the 80's).
Perhaps Danke could though. It might save another dog like Luca.
