 dog licking hand equals grooming?

Well, we had walking over the dog or moving the dog. Now I have a question:
If your dog licks your hand (in a grooming way, not a begging way) do you allow it or do you stop it?
Lucy licked my hand and "groomed me" for about 10 seconds. I was afraid to move because this is the first time she has offered her muzzle anywhere near my hand. Jubilation on my part (silent of course).
So, "special" circumstances aside, how many have dogs that 'groom' them and what say the trainers (all of ya)? Bad form or up to individual cases?

Its a personal preference thing, honestly.
Danke is a horrible licker. Mostly, its an affectionate, submissive behavior, but I can't stand it. She licks her butt and eats poop, so come on, I don't want her lickin' me!
I'll let her lick a couple of times, and then I move my hand away and stroke her for awhile so she doesn't feel rebuffed.

In your case Jo, I would allow it as she has had a hard time warming up to you. Maybe I would only allow a few seconds 20 ish so it doesn't turn into a compulsion.
I have wondered about this kind of licking too. I only allow it sometimes. It started after hiking when I was sweaty and he'd clean of my salty skin. Sometimes it is only a few licks, but there are times where he'd lick for 10 minutes if I would allow it.

Frankly, in your case I would mark and reward ALL licking from Ms Lucy. With a VERY high value treat and tons of praise.
Make a total happy party of it.

When I was bonding with my pup I let him submissively lick my hands all he wanted, I didn't let him do it if he was being demanding though...kind of a body language thing. But mostly I feel like Alyssa, I let the dogs do it a few times and then I pet them. Then, I go rinse the spit off my hands.

A submissive dog will groom the higher ranking dog, especially under the chin. Nothing wrong with allowing your dog to lick you, if you can stand the tickling and the ick factor. I allow licking after a display of calm behavior upon greeting, and while I'm grooming her back.

Thanks for the replies. I was unsure whether to mark for the licking. But, as stated, this is a POSITIVE step forward in our relationship. I did tell her yes--good girl (quietly--afraid to ruin it), followed by string cheese (one of her favorites) and she seemed "very pleased" with herself. Later, she touched my hand with her nose during marker training (she watched Hambone punch with his nose and get really yummy treats), and got jackpotted. She did it twice more before she just couldn't do it again (it stressed her), so we ended the session on a sit and a "here" front sit.
So! It appears we are one step forward. I am sure we will go two steps back, but I am pleased as punch for now.

My husband does not like licking, and we have tried just about everything we can to get Bindi to stop licking him. I think she does it out of nervousness and an act of submission. But when my husband tries to pet her, all she wants to do is to lick and lick and lick. when she licks, he immediately says no, but she is not connecting the licking with the no. Does anyone have some suggestions on how we could help her to understand he does not like to be licked.
She doesn't lick me at all, and quests she continually tries to lick. We have used bitter apple and it doesn't have much affect on her.
So, any help greatly appreciated. She is a very very smart dog, so I know once we make the connection she will get it.
