My GSD is almost 6 months old. I purchased a few cow femurs and knuckle bones. I read in the puppy section that it is ok to give them recreational bones up to 6 or 7 months. I gave her the femur bone and she started to break the end off in pieces, so I took it away and gave her a knuckle bone.
With both of these bones she goes into the bushes and chews them. She does the same thing with her food. Sometimes I notice her food is covered with dirt.
So here are my concerns:
1. I am thinking that up to 6 or 7 months was because of baby teeth. She has most of her permenent teeth now and I don't want her to break them...any other type recreational bone or just use bully sticks?
2. Her food is full of dirt at times and I am concerned about her eating it.
3. I was going to police her eating in the house at her "place" inside, but we "both" seem to enjoy her eating the raw food outside. The sun is shining and it is nice outside here is So. CA, what the heck am I going to do in the winter when it rains?
Thanks,
Anna

1). Can't help you with.
2). I don't have a problem with dirt. My dogs always ate their own catch with "dirt". Dirt is full of good bacteria. Sometimes, yes, it can have 'worms" etc, but on the whole, eh...good for the dog.
(But, I lived on a farm all my life. Dirt is a constant companion.)
3.) Do you have an awning in the winter time she and you could hang under? Could she eat in the kitchen on the linoleum?
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

I feed RMBs outside year-round, rain or shine. I have a small awning where he'll eat if it's pouring but he usually doesn't care if he gets a bit wet during breakfast. Food doesn't last long enough for him to get completely soaked. He gets all kinds of stuff stuck to his RMBs and it's never bothered him, hurt him, or stopped him from devouring his food.
Venison necks are a nice alternative to femur and knuckle bones. They are actually RMBs....completely consumable...but big enough and just hard enough that it takes my dog (who inhales everything) a long time to finish. I do give knuckle bones on occasion. Their large, curvy shape makes it much harder for my dog to snap off pieces.

We give messy stuff in the crate, then just wipe out with a clorox wipe and rinse with a water paper towel.

Should I not give Dublin (8weeks) raw bones yet? I stopped at the buther and he gave me at least 10 lbs. of lamb bones for 99 cents. gave one to Dublin and he LOVED IT!!!! So far it's the only thing he's shown any interest in.

1. I am thinking that up to 6 or 7 months was because of baby teeth. She has most of her permenent teeth now and I don't want her to break them...any other type recreational bone or just use bully sticks? Bully sticks, stuffed kongs, BIG RMB's.
2. Her food is full of dirt at times and I am concerned about her eating it. Find a place without dirt, like grass or a mat.
3. I was going to police her eating in the house at her "place" inside, but we "both" seem to enjoy her eating the raw food outside. The sun is shining and it is nice outside here is So. CA, what the heck am I going to do in the winter when it rains? For her.
For you.

Ok, thanks for the info. I don't have an awning or a patio, but I do have large umbrella's I can open (thanks Michael for the pictures, your funny!). I prefer to let her eat like a savage outside.
If the dirt is no problem I won't worry.
Sarah, I didn't know they even sold Venison in California!

1. I'm not sure I'd worry about it.
2. "It never rains in Southern California." And even when it does, it isn't usually real rain. But an awning would be good.
3. Do you have kids? My kids stuffed so much dirt in their mouths when they were little and my back was turned for, oh, two seconds, that I never really worried about my dog eating dirt.

1. Ok
2. It is all relative....compared to Washingon it is like summer all year round here.
3. Yes, I have a 38 and 28 year old. I don't remember them eating dirt, but they are girls.....Thanks!

I get my Bravo venison necks from my raw food store...not something you'll likely find in the grocery.
There is at least one So. Cal raw co-op on Yahoo, plus numerous on-line sources for hard-to-find/exotic meats and RMBs. You can also check on the Bravo site for retailers near you who could order venison necks, among other things.
