Stop reading right now if you have not finished the book.
I finished the book a couple days ago...
WHAT!?
That was a horrible ending, IMHO. Maybe you have to read Hamlet to really appreciate it all, but I thought it was really frustrating and depressing. There seemed like a lot of loose ends* and open-ness to interpretation. Too much for my liking. I think the author is a good writer and creates good word pictures but I, personally, do not like his style.
*What was with Forte and Essay just going off into the woods together?
Where the heck did the dogs end up at the end?
The 'accident' with Doctor Papinuae (sp?) was a little confusing...
I'll probably think of more questions later, but I don't have the book with me at the moment.
So, thoughts, opinions?
Hopefully Alyssa will have something to say.
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
For those who enjoy a good book, I highly recommend The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I'm having a difficult time putting down - it is beautifully written and the story really "grabs ya".
The story takes place in rural Wisconsin and centers around a mute teenage boy and the fictional breed of dog the family raises. You can get more info from the author's website :www.davidwroblewski.com

I'll second both the recommendation...and Lynne's caveat.
It's a wonderful story for those of us in the world who understand the concept of a heart-dog.
This is not the same kind of pop-culture dog story as in so many other books I've read (Marley and Me and the like). This writer actually understands dogs and how to interact with them AS dogs. I read the book a couple of months ago and am still thinking about it.
Yes, it gets gloomy. Life does too. Nothing that would make me tell anyone not to read it.
Great book. Hated to see the end approach.
JMHO.
Oh, absolutely.
There are so many parts of that book that I loved; the author knows dogs and has a unique way of writing about them.
I knew from peeking on-line that the ending wasn't roses, and I think I enjoyed the book more, knowing that in advance... (if that makes any sesne... )
I'll be happy to mail you mine if you can wait until I'm done!
I absolutely love the "visual pictures" the author creates with his wording... I go back and read some sentences several times because the evoke such powerful images... I also like when he "speaks" from the dog's perspective - very interesting. :-)
Alyssa, I thought of you the other night when I was reading this book; one specific paragraph brought you to mind. I'll send it via a PM.
Thank you guys for all the kind offers (I got a couple of PM offers, too).
I ordered the book on Amazon after reading all the good reviews from you guys. Amazon had a .pdf of the entire first chapter, and after reading that, I couldn't NOT order it.
Finally, a truly gifted modern writer. 'Bout time.
