Wanted to start tracking with my dogs for some mental excersise and becuase I think it would be good for them.
Where do I start?
I might be asking for alot just let me know.
I don't even know how or what. I get the concept and understand what it is but didn't see much on Ed's site other than tracking thru drive ebook. It was 128 pages so I didn't read it all.
Find some nice grass about 4inches long if possible and make 3 or four scent pads. Thats a square area about 3'x3' that you stomp down the grass. Spread food around in it and let your dog sniff around in it for the food.
At some point you'll see that he is not leaving the scent pad. Mine was real obvious the way he worked the edges of it. Thats when I started laying short tracks out of the scent pad. I like laying three tracks with bait pretty much trenching along in the beginning more then footsteps. Be patient, every step takes time.
I kind of fumbled around in the beginning and then ended up starting all over and for the most part using what I read in Tracking from the beginning by Gary Patterson.
There are different ways to do a lot of this but the biggest thing to remember is don't rush.
Just something to help excersie the mind a bit. I would say practical. He sniffs everything outside and that comes through the house...mail, leerburg packages my work bag, me, my girlfriend and suitcases for like 10 minutes. Not saying that would make him a good prospect for sport but sure seems like he likes to sniff.

Thanks Steve! I will try that out and see what happens. Any other books you reccommend or just that one.
