The last two days my bullmastiff, Star, has been in pain in her chest area. We think maybe she has a bone stuck, but aren't sure.
Star came in Sunday morning after being out in the yard for about an hour, just pacing and following my husband everywhere. We had to leave, so she went to her bed and laid down, and was there when we returned 4 hours later. She cried when she got up. Yesterday she was doing better, quit pacing and even ran in the yard a bit. But today when it was time to get up from her bed again, she cried. Her legs are fine, it wasn't a problem with her legs. My husband tried to help her up, but by trying to lift her up around her chest, she yelped even louder.
I think it was her Saturday pork bone. She usually chews the ends off and leaves the 3-4 inch long straight part in the yard, which I throw away. I hadn't thrown it away, yet, but Sunday afternoon I walked the yard and I couldn't find it, that's why I think she may have swallowed it.
She's two years old and hasn't had any problems with bones before. She eats a chicken leg drumstick several times a week, and chews it fine. The meat store gives us cow and pig bones, which I freeze and let her gnaw on one every day. My husband has always been skeptical of bones and raw food, but I've pushed for it and as long as there were no problems, he was okay with it.
Now that she's in pain he is angry that she had a bone. What can I do for this? Should I give her milk & peroxide mixed and make her try and throw it up? Will bones dissolve eventually? They digest fine when they are in her stomach, but if it's stuck somewhere along the way, there are no stomach acids to digest this one. She once ate a sock that never came out and the milk and peroxide mix made her throw it up after an entire week. The bone might come out, or it might hurt her worse trying to come back up.
She's eating normally and seems to be pooping. Yesterday's poop was mostly liquid, though - most likely from the stress of the pain. What can I do?

She has been in pain for 2 days. It doesn't matter whether it is a bone or not. Take her to the vet!!

That's the thing. I live in Estonia and the vets here won't act right away. I've taken her before when she's hurt her leg or pulled a muscle, and they always say "let her rest for two weeks". But if they don't know what it is they just say, "lets wait a few days and see what happens, don't worry". I think if she was in the process of choking or having a seizure or a heart attack or something they could see, they would do something. But for a pain they can't see, they say "let her rest a few days and see what happens". After two years I've gotten cynical about going to the vet and do as much research as I can before taking her in.
(I have a friend who took her dog to the vet because it was coughing a lot. The vet said "it's those American dogs - they are allergic to the plants here and cough a lot". Only it was February and nothing was blooming - everything was covered in snow.)

What was the volume of liquid? Liquid poop can also indicate a blockage, where just the liquid is able to pass by and be eliminated.
If she continues to have liquid poop and is in apparent pain get her to the vet and insist on an x-ray...

today her poop is completely normal, and she's pooped 3 times already. she doesn't seem to be comfortable - paces and follows me around the house and doesn't want to lay down. she'll lay down only if I lay down with her. she's being very needy.
on Sunday morning I killed a big black spider (they are common here, but I don't know what they are) that was beside her bed and then today I picked up her bed and there was another one under it. I can't find any bites, but would a spider bite of a non-poisonous spider cause a lot of pain?

Brenda,
In all seriousness - take her to the vet. Cynicism or not - she needs to be checked out and INSIST that they do something. Afterall - the vets work for YOU not the other way around.

Brenda, it's good that she's eating and pooping normally. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you except take her to the vet and see what he thinks...

If your dog is not getting better, you simply need to get it to the vet, and don't leave until they figure out what the issue is. Just because they blew you off once doesn't mean they will this time. Keep us posted!

Thanks everyone! The vet is closed for the day but she seems to be doing a bit better. I'll keep a close eye on her tonight and then take her in tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I'm happy to report that Star woke up this morning acting perfectly normal. She's her happy self again - was very active on her walk today and now lying comfortably on the floor next to me as I'm writing this. She's not pacing at all and not whining when she gets up. Whatever it was seems to have gone. I was prepared to take her to the vet this morning, but it seems now that she is fine. I'll keep a close eye on her to watch for any signs of something wrong. I'm just so thankful she's feeling better! I hate to see my baby in pain.
Thanks for all your support!
Brenda
