Hi...My dog met with an accident 2 yrs back, and he had undergone surgery in his front limb. we had installed a plate and screws in his limb...he has been able to lead a normal life since then, however there was constant oozing, we removed the plate last month and he is able to walk, jump, but d oozing continues, there is an abscess around the limb, once which is burst open he feels relieved, vets cannot give a solution, can anyone here give me some inputs on this??
Infections of the bone, following surgery, are not unusual and can become chronic if left untreated. From the little bit of reading, it's important your vet cultures the draining fluid so you know exactly what you're dealing with.
No clue if osteomyelitis is what your dog has but might be worth mentioning to your vet?
Osteomyelitis is treatable by the quinolone class of antibiotics ( Cipro, Floxin, and several others ).
Your vet can do a swab of the discharge and do a culture and sensitivity of the causative organism, then prescribe the appropriate antibody.
Easy peasy!
Thanks Sarah and Will, the bone is not infected according to the vet, but they doubt the presence of catget which was embedded and remained undissolved, yes, I will still go ahead and to a culture and senstivity test..
