Its official, we did not pass our OFA prelim. I was just
sick over it but now moving on. Luna will be spayed before
her next heat. What irritates me is the number of German Shepherds and other large breed dogs that are bred by people
who are clueless about this disableing disease or who are so
money hungry they don't care. I won't be part of it.
Sorry guys I had to let off some steam!!!!!

I am sorry to hear that Betty. Were Luna's parents OFAd? I agree about some so called breeders. I once answered an ad for Rottweiller puppies who had a 13 month old sire. I inquired how she could know that the sire did't have any genetic problems. She said it was his fifth litter (!) and all the other puppies were "just fine" so he was obviously fine too. Plus her vet told her that he was okay to breed "whenever he was ready". So I obviously didn't know what I was talking about. GRRR
If that sire turned out to be dysplastic, that is a heck of a lot of dogs that could have inherited it. And a heck of a lot of unneccessary heartbreak for owners and pain for the dogs.
Some people just do not care, and it's the dogs who suffer.

Lynn and Angela: Thanks for your replys. Luna's father was out
of OFA stock though not x-rayed himself. Luna's mother was
not x-rayed. I should have known better but wanted a white
shepherd really bad (parents were not white). I took the
gamble and only have myself to blame. Luna shows
no outward signs of any hip problems to date, she is of proper
weight 66 lbs and very energetic. We will be starting our
next obedience class in a week which runs to August. As soon as
class is over I will have her spayed and will pay close attention
to her weight after that so as not to stress her hips.
Thanks as always

OFA issues certificates, and I ALWAYS ask to see them. I wouldn't breed a dog that tests lower than "good". If I were to send a bitch to an outside stud, I would insist on retaining a copy of that stud's OFA certificate in addition to the results of any other tests.
Unfortunately, a "good" or better rating still isn't a guarantee that none of the pups will be dysplastic, but it sure helps to increase the odds.
Thank god for people who love their breed enough to do the testing, and refuse to contribute to the problem.
I'm sorry about your results, Betty, but GOOD FOR YOU for doing the right thing.

Kristel: Thanks for the kind words. I do so love the white
german shepherd and I know alot of people don't but thats okay.
Because I love the breed so much I can not in good conscience
perpetuate this problem that does nothing for the breed, all I can do now is show her off as she is a gorgeous representative of
the breed and continue with her obedience work. She is the
queen bee of the dog park, everyone there loves her, she is
people friendly, dog friendly, child friendly, not food agressive
even to the point of bringing me her bones. What more can I say.
To me she is a joy.
Thanks again

I second this in full - I'm sure this news made your heart sink Betty, but I get a glimmer of hope every time I hear about an individual taking responsibility for a less than ideal situation, and the disappointment that comes with it, in order to protect a great many others (humans AND dogs) from the heartbreak and pain of genetic disease. You sound like you have a fantastic companion in Luna, so just enjoy her for everything she is and don't focus on this fault - you have plenty of time to seek out a future breeding prospect if you're serious about improving the breed, and you'll know that much more about what to look for having been through this experience.

Natalya and Terra: Thanks for your sincere thoughts. Yes, I'm
sick over it but have to move forward. I appreciate all the
kind words written on this forum and the help I've received
each time I've come to a problem and needed some help or advise.
Thanks to all.

I am not the expert on this, but my friend is a vet tech and shows and breeds cockers and she said that she had one dog that came back as FAIR and when she did it again within a few months it came back as EXCELLENT. I believe the score is the average of three doctors opinions..... ???
I mean, if you can keep control of her when she's in heat and not let her breed, why not wait and do another test?
What did your vet say of the x-rays? Is he or she experienced?
