Hello Everyone, now that summer is apon us just wanted to get some ideas on how to keep my dog cool and safe when it is warm out. I have an all white JRT that loves to go hiking with us in the hot California sun. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with those cooling vests and what you think of them? We usually don't hike for more than an hour or so at a time but it is quite warm and dry out so would one even be needed? (we stop to give her water to drink about every 15 min or so). Also, I saw someone post about beach tips and sunblock....would baby sunblock be fine for the dogs nose? Just wondering if she licks it would it hurt her? I would think that if you can put it on babies it should be fine but ya never know. Thanks in advance for your answers.
I like it! I bought a dog pack from REI for my GSD and Lab to share when we go on vacation-have to have a custom fit one made for our Saint, though.
The cooling vest is a great idea, make sure to let your dog try it on and wear it around the house a bit so she gets used to it.
As for sunscreen, I personally don't worry about it with my dog (maybe I should *shrug*, never have) keep your girl well hydrated and I wouldn't think there'd be any problems. Maybe someone else here has used sunscreen on their dogs nose and can tell ya whether to do it or not.
Yea, I thought the vest was a cool idea. I actually found it while looking up if I should pour water on my dog to cool her off on hikes....found out that isn't the best thing to do.
I wouldn't worry about the sunblock but the top of her snout is real pink along with her ears and around her eyes. She is not outside all that much but when we go on hikes I would like for her to be protected. Since there is never very much shade on our hikes I figured I would fund the best way to keep her cool.
