Just curious if it was ok to feed whole birds such as starlings and sparrows to our dogs? Perhaps pigeons as well. It's legal to trap them and we can shoot them as well, as long as we're out of the city.
There are TONS of sparrows in my back yard and I was doing some reading here:
( Warning! There are some graphic pictures!! ) http://www.sialis.org/hosp.htm
I didn't realize they were so harmful, though I knew they were considered pests. I keep three big feeders out in my back yard and I think I've attracted an army of them..They bully the other birds around anyway and I'd like to find a good use for them.
You should probably use a small caliber rifle or pellet/BB gun instead of a shotgun. My biggest worry with that is biting in to a piece of shot.
The smaller sparrows and starlings being gulped by your bigger dogs. Not necessarily a problem. You know how your dogs eat so use your judgment there. They may be small enough that they go down easily even if they are gulped down in one bite.
The bigger pigeons probably wouldn't pose that problem.
Thanks guys. Yeah. I can tell the difference between them easily. My boyfriend, not so much sometimes-but he has me to help and it's funny but I'm transforming him into a birder.
The only other visitors to our feeders that look anything like a house sparrow are white crowned sparrows and chipping sparrows but it's extremely easy to tell the difference, especially up close.
