I have been successful at my first ever attempt at hatching chickens! Out of twenty four eggs we've ended up with 18 little fuzzy butts running around the brooder in the garage. We are working toward becoming a bit more self-sufficient and plan on raising chickens and rabbits not only for us but for Falcon as well. They are cute as can be but I'm NOT going to name them!
I helped with the chicken killin, pluckin and cleanin as a young girl and I don't ever want to do it again. I thought it was kinda fun back then, even looked forward to the tasty dishes my grandmother would make with them. Guess I've gotten soft in my old age! I do understand the the circle of life though and the whole "live off the land thing".
Congrats on the new babies Barbara, I know they are cute!
I've been hatching chicks here too. I hatched 11 assorted chicks and I also hatched a goose egg, "Solo" is a week and 2 days old and I am crazy about this little goose!
she's imprinted on me and follows me all over. I got her a couple of buddies, Buff goslings named Sonny & Cher but she doesn't want anything to do with them.

Didn't Conrad Lorenz start out with geese?
You might want to invite her and her "buddies" to dinner for the holidays!
have you ever plucked and cleaned chickens before?
Nope. Cleaning fish is the closest I've gotten to eviscerating an animal! However, there are several different ways to go about it, and if you don't want to eat the skin you can "strip" the chicken feathers and all! :-) There is also this weird contraption out there called a "wiz banger" (I can hear the jokes all ready...) which does the job for ya'.
As with all things, I'm sure there is going to be a huge learning curve, but I'm trainable. Fortunately, my husband is up for the task, so somehow we will stumble through. If not, the dogs get to eat chickens, feathers and all and I'll just eat a lot of quiche!

Dumb question... do you eat goose eggs or is she just for fun? The video is precious!
A friend of ours gave me 4 goose eggs to incubate, just for fun. None of them survived except Solo.
Bob Scott--I could NEVER "have" Solo for dinner, unless that means pulling up a chair for her to join us at the table. Of course a diaper would be mandatory attire for her. I actually just ordered some books by Konrad Lorenz about geese, I'll let you know how they are.
Ed asked me yesterday if I was going to marker train her, maybe....
If ANYONE can marker train a goose, it is you Cindy! I've heard they are quite good "guard animals"... I've been chased off of a property by a mad swan, and let me tell you - THAT is a scary sight! I didn't know I could move so fast... someone should have had a video camera handy; in hind sight - I'm sure I looked ridiculous!
