i am still having trouble keeping a decent weight on capone. he eats 4 cups of evo a day, plus some canned food every few days, and i give raw when i can. he gets eggs mixed in, grease sometimes, and fat if i am trimming meat.
so, someone suggested mixing in a good puppy kibble with his evo, any recommendations?

Also, does he eat everything, or leave some?
Vet-check all fine?

he is a good 5-8 lbs underweight, and not so hot muscle tone(i know that genetics plays a lot in that). he is a very thick boned dog.
he eats ALL his food, always. and is otherwise healthy(well, nothing is wrong with him, he has the allergies, and funky elbows, lol).
i could just feed him more evo, but that is just a LOT of really expensive food.

Mallory in all honesty I would move him over to an all raw diet if you have a butcher nearby.
You should find that you will be paying just a little less for a raw diet than you would for a high end kibble, and it's better for him.
I've found that regulating my dogs weight has been VERY easy using a raw diet and I've noticed some great health benefits already.
Do you have a butcher nearby? Or is kibble your only option because of lack of availability ?
No, I am not an alien! |

Hi Mallory,
I have one dog who is a difficult dog to keep weight on, to put it lightly. Frankly I pet him sometimes and I get the mental image of animal cops breaking down my door.
With him I finally noticed it was a cycle thing. He'd go two weeks great and two weeks cruddy. Repeate.
Finally the thing that seems to be working (knock on wood) is 50% kibble, 50% THK embark, with Showstopper as an additive. The added fat seems to have done wonders. He is also fed right before putting him up in his crate either for work or for the night. I took the idea from Sumo wrestlers who use the technique of digesting while resting as an easy way for weight gain.
Finally if you haven't done it yet have your boy's thyroid tested. Bodie's was in the range of normal but when this problem first seriously came up at maturity I wanted to be sure. Thyroid issues are also thought to be genetic.

Melissa,
What brand of kibble are you using with the THK, and what is showstopper?
I have the same fears about Loki, he is just on the edge of too skinny all the time. Currently he is 67 lbs and I really think he should be closer to 73-75.
I was hoping neutering would help him keep some weight on, but over a year later there is no change in his weight.
I was thinking about making a big batch of satin balls to supplement his diet with, that worked for Nico when she was competing in Dock Dogs and all the swimming took its toll on her.

One food thought - take a look at different mushers and what they feed, and the different supplements they give (different kennels will give different things). They're feeding dogs that use a huge amount of fuel, so keeping weight on is important. You might find something helpful there.
....hunting/retrieving kennels could be similarly helpful.
Here's one food brand an Ititarod musher uses:

Note: I have NO personal experience with this food.

Thanks!
Right now they are eating a combination of EVO and Chicken soup brand puppy formula dry and either EVO canned or Core canned every other day or so.
SO does anyone know why certain dogs are such hard keepers? And is it normally males who tend towards the two thin side?
