I have a beautiful sweet female who is 8 years old . She possibly has some whippet and Yellow Lab in her. She LOVES to run and has always been very well behaved the perfect companion dog. However We just got a Dachshund Cocker Spaniel puppy and I have noticed that Angel will deffer to Harper in all things. She will move off her blanket and let Harper have it right down to letting the puppy walk up and take a chew bone out of her mouth. I am not sure how to deal with this because I don't want Harper to become aggressive to Angel. Angel has always been a Zeta dog never a Beta, I am obviously Alpha So does that mean its ok for me to put Harper in place or does that mean Angel should?

Hi Amber,
Your puppy is very cute! But your pic is enormous; can you downsize it?
You need to be 'protecting' your older dog from the puppy. You are the pack leader. Don't let the puppy's behavior escalate to the point that your older dog needs to give it a correction.

Thank you for answering, That's what I was thinking but wanted to make sure.I want to do whats best for both the dogs. When we got Angel she didn't require hardly any correction and the only other time we have had multiple dogs was when I was a kid and my mom was of course in charge.
Sorry about the picture size I am working on that one.

Hi Amber
FYI, per the board rules, you may only post 2 photos in your Bio (not in any other forum). You can of course post a link to a photo, that is perfectly fine.
What everyone else said is correct. Your adult dog should not HAVE to correct the puppy. It is YOUR job to teach the pup the rules. Also, the pup should always be on a leash until he earns his right to be off it. Do you have crates for both dogs?

The puppy has a crate but the older dog has never been crated. She does however have her own blanket she has always slept on in the room she shares with my daughter. And I don't allow the puppy on it. They are separated at night The puppy in my room in a crate and Angel in her room with Hannah on her blanket. leash is only off when I am watching the puppy or she is in her crate. We spend a lot of time out side in a fenced yard and my husband feels the leash is too much. Working on that one.

Hello Amber, I have been having the same issues as yourself. It's cute to start with, the pup nipping at the older dog, and the older dog not fighting back, and being cool and generous on sharing the blanket. When the pup goes to 'join' the older dog on the blanket or the bed from now on, I too shall have to say no to the young dog, we thought it was kinda cute, but also the older dog looks at us, with a "please" look, we should have 'listened' and corrected earlier.
So now we too are trying to eliminate the puppy nipping by separating them, Seems sad, but if that is the way it's got to be, well we shall all get used to it.
All the best.

I know Connie, but I have the same issues. Just watched a cute video of a GS letting a tiny chihawa?? bite and tug at her. This is how my GS is, I tell her to get up, because isn't this encouraging the GR/Malamute to be dominanate over her?

It's your job as pack leader to protect your dogs from each other. It's your job not to allow one dog to bite the other.
If one has to be on a tether when they are loose, then it's your job to see to it. If they have to be separated, ditto.
