Just cleaned out Hambone's ear last night. No indication anything was wrong with his ear...except his face was kinda puffy on that side for a few days, but he did fight a snake, so wasn't worried.
Anyway, down inside the cup, that part that is about a finger depth in that is curved like a cup, I swabbed out so much reddish brown paste, I was ill looking at it. I do have a sample on a sterile gauze pad to take to the vet tomorrow, and did swab out with distilled white vinegar and water; but just wondering if you all could tell me if this was:
a) yeast infection
b) exploded tick
c) possible stickie down in his ear
d) something else
Just opine for me. I will take sample to vet tomorrow (and bring pups with me just in case they can peek tomorrow).
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

Hi Jo,
Just cleaned out Hambone's ear last night. No indication anything was wrong with his ear..
So is that comment with the exception of the goo you cleaned out? Or was there a change from last night's cleaning to this morning? Did his ear, or more appropriately, the gunk you cleaned out, have a sour or "footy" smell?
I don't have experience with anything other than ear yeast infections, but yeast infections will cause rapid buildup of stinky dark brown uck (we call it ear fudge), and cause the dog to shake his head a lot and or itch his ears. They're relatively easy to get rid of, you'll just need to start a treatment of ear washing with special vet solution.
Doesn't sound to me like an exploded tick, which would look a lot more clearly like blood (bright red if fresh, crusty and dark if old and dry).
Taking a sample to the vet should settle it, no matter what it was though. And if Hambone is acting normally and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, I'm sure he can wait it out till tomorrow.
Hope it's nothing major!

Oh...okay....
No indication of anything wrong last night, but I check and swipe ears periodically just to see.
After swiping out ear, ear is at half mast and head tilted.
So, called vet and they will check sample for me.
And, it looks like thick almost dry chocolate frosting or thick hot fudge.
And, no smell. I have a sensitive nose and can detect no odor at all, which puzzles me.

Edit reason: added odor info

Hmmm, that doesn't sound like a yeast infection. Ear mites can cause dark brown stuff to accumulate too, more crumbly than gooey, but I don't have personal experience with that.
Is Hambone itchy? Is there redness in the ear?
There is also a possibility that it's just a bunch of dirt mixed with ear wax.

foot in ear, shaking head, but I haven't seen mites...oh well, tomorrow we go to the vet to drop off sample.
I will continue to use the distilled white vinegar and water until then. It appears to bring some relief.
Thanks!
Oh, and he had the cleanest ears my vet had ever seen. I looked in the scope and no wax build up, no dirt, no stickers, etc. But, this was about 2 months ago.

Let us know how it goes at the vet!
And, pardon a silly question, but what's a "sticker"?

Oh, its shaped like a spear head with two tails hanging off that pierce flesh; it burrow deeply into skin or ears.

his face was kinda puffy on that side for a few days, but he did fight a snake, so wasn't worried. Sorry for the off topic, but did i read that right? You WEREN'T worried that your dog tangled with a snake and then had his face swell up?

Oh...I saw the snake...little snake, no fangs, happened before and he swells but benedryl takes care of it. So, no, not worried. Just didn't put a lot of information in the post.
Sorry. I would have been worried if we hadn't been down this road before and I hadn't seen the snake. Bit meaning cut from the snake's mouth, but no fang penetration.
