Is anyone able to recommend a good albeit inexpensive (but of course LOL) security video system? I would want the video to record, not just to play on a screen.
I would probably need a few cameras. I'm looking for coverage around my kennel area and two of my property lines.
One of the guy's here at work spent about 1600 dollars for a system that records to a hard drive like a tivo. He got it at http://www.supercircuits.com
They have a lot of different systems at low and high prices.

We used something similar to this on the farm. Really camera systems are very inexpensive now. I wouldn't spend more than $600 on a home system anymore. You can also pick them up sometimes on ebay and craigslist.
I bought a 4 camera system from Walmart for about $600. It didn't have sound capability so I returned it as there were cheaper systems with sound and similar video quality.
Costco, walmart, sams etc all carry some sort of camera system. Lorax, Q-See, SVAT are all names you will see. They all appear similar to me so I'm thinking you'd be good to go buying any of them.
One thing I learned is that lighting is your friend. Most cameras have IR lighting to aid in nighttime recording, but the IR emitters can burn out. Using a motion sensing flood light to light the area being recorded is a better option.
Good luck.
There are three constants in life: Death, taxes and the love of a dog.
Even the best don't take pictures that far out. The trigger speeds are also too slow to reliably catch an image of someone/thing moving in front of the camera. Most times you'd end up with a picture of nothing.
I know you said you wanted a camera that records to disk, but I plan on getting this camera system once it comes out this summer. http://vuezone.com/
It's $300 and comes with 2 cameras and 4 mounts. I like the fact that I can just pick up the camera (it mounts magnetically) and move it to a different mount. It streams to the web (hosted by the Vue website), and you can record video, but it doesn't record constantly. It doesn't have any wires and is battery operated, they're supposedly small and easy to hide. I work at a computer all day so it'll be easy to keep up the streaming screen when I'm at work.
We plan on using one to keep an eye on the baby's room once the baby arrives this fall, and one on the puppy when we have her in the backyard.

You can get trail cameras that record video. Not just pictures
