My GSD has a sensitive stomach and seems prone to stomach troubles. I noticed this morning that she has diarrhea. I haven't gone out to investigate it, but I'm guessing it is of the pudding variety.
From reading past messages from here, I gather that the protocol is to fast the dog for 24 hours, then give chicken and rice.
I have a few questions--do you fast the dog at first sign of diarrhea? Or do you feed the dog some canned pumpkin, watch to see if that helps, and then proceed with fasting?
As for the chicken and rice, how much do you feed the dog (my girl is close to 60 lb.)? And is poaching the preferred method of preparing the chicken? How many days do you do the diet of chicken and rice?
Finally, for a dog with a sensitive stomach, would it be wise to purchase a stomach soother for her, such as Imodium AD?
Thanks!

Can't answer the other questions, but one thing I have researched and found to be consistent...do not give anything like Immodium that will stop the diarrhea. If it is due to bacteria, you want it out of the system. Fasting helps with warm (not hot) light chicken broth for fluids (baited water).
Then, the rest, others will coach you through.
NO IMMODIUM!
OH, and since she has issues, has she been checked for colitis, Giardia, EPI, Crohns, etc? Anything that could be the CAUSE of the problem instead of just treating the symptoms? Just curious, as it could affect how you treat in the future.

Ditto to all the above, and also it's critical to know: Have you changed the food lately? What is it? When was the last fecal done? Is this pudding or water? When was the last formed poop, and how formed was it? How often are these bouts happening?
By "first sign," do you mean that yesterday was formed logs?

Thanks for the replies. It's been raining hard here, so I haven't been able to closely examine the poop from this AM. From what I viewed from the door way, it seemed like pudding. It's not uncontrollable--no accidents. Yesterday everything seemed fine. I switched her over to Innova about two months ago after a round of diarrhea per the rec of her vet. She had a fecal done then, and nothing negative showed up at that time.
I know each case can have different surrounding circumstances, and I don't want to ignore signs that may point to something serious. At the same time, since she seems more prone to tummy upsets, I'm trying to learn when to jump into action to modify her diet, take in a stool sample, etc. and when to just let it be.

How old is she (over a year I Think now?) and how long has she had a problem with her tummy and what did the vet say when you mentioned it to him/her?

Also, if you have the paperwork from the fecal, what was ruled out? Was there a flotation as well as a microscope look?

I don't have the paperwork from the fecal, but I'll talk to my vet and bring him these questions. You're right--she is just over a year. She's always had a sensitive stomach--diarrhea for any commercial treat (beggin' bacon strips really did a number on her!) and she'll throw up if she ingests the smallest bit of a bone or stick.
Thanks again for quick replies. This group is wonderful, and I hope I can contribute advice one day!

Okay...good...and also ask if there is a test to check for enzyme deficiency (just thinking out loud, not necessary a problem with your pup). I think if the poop is really fatty, that may indicate it. Just sound him out, and see if you can get some basic things done JUST from the old fashion way...smell it and look at it.
Hey, it has worked for centuries! If your vet is good, it can help to eliminate some tests, so you don't have to spend so much money.

"beggin' bacon strips really did a number on her"
A dog who needs non-crap rewards ... many or most dogs tolerate the terrible stuff you find in supermarkets, but good stuff is (1) much cheaper, (2) smaller, (3) real food.
http://leerburg.com/treat.htm
First row right and left, and second row center, are the three I have found to be bullet-proof, even with sensitive dogs.
(They are all good for most dogs.)
And you can take a skinless chicken breast and bake it or poach it and cut it into dozens of rewards. (Cooking it makes it easy to handle and gives it a "treat" aroma.)
Has the dog had bouts that lasted for days?

ahhhh...good catch on the beggin' strips! Nope, don't use that stuff. Use zukes and Wellness treats (pet store), they have no grain at all, no wheat, soy, etc.and usually don't cause tummy upset. (I cut ZUkes and Wellness treats into strips and the strips into squares and my pups love them just as much as if they were large.)
Poached chicken breast for your girl is good too. Connie is a genius at this stuff and you can't go wrong with her suggestions of treats.
