We brought home a new puppy on Monday. We have 6 children and a 3 year old Lab. Our 14 year old is responsible for the lab. Our 11 year old wanted to be the one to train the new puppy but it sounds like it should be our 14 year old so both dogs have the same master. Thoughts? Also, should we be letting the other children play with the new puppy while we're establishing dominance, etc?
Master, and trainer aren't necessarily the same thing.
I see nothing wrong with the 11 year old training the puppy, provided there are some clear ground rules about acceptable treatment and care, along with supervision.
Don't look at it as establishing dominance.
You're establishing leadership.
After an initial period of limiting interaction to allow the pup to adjust, provided (again, I know) good supervision and ground rules are in place, the kids can play with the puppy.
I see no harm.
