First time attempting to breed my two GSD’s. The female is three yrs old and has never been bread before. Bleeding has been going on for a couple of weeks and the male has shown little to know interest, until Tuesday evening when I noticed her discharge changed color from a dark red to a light almost pink color. Suddenly the male came to life. My question is it is now Friday morning and the female will have nothing to do with the male, K-9’s and flying fur is the events of the past few days. She has not done any flagging yet and wants nothing to do with him. When we she become corporative or will she ever?
1. Why are you breeding a puppy?
2. Has your female been cleared for breeding? hip tested/cleared? Elbows cleared? Any titles? (Obviously your male has not).
I'm going to refrain from posting any advice because I don't know if it's in the dogs' best interest what you are doing.
It's just a question...
I don't know if it is or not; I was referring to this post... Post from Dec.'08

Let me set the stage quickly first. I current own a 2 ½ yr old female GSD she resides with the family in the house. Last week we brought home a new member to our family, an 8wk old male GSD.
No the male is not my 9 month old puppy. It is a co-workers male that is in my care right now and he is also three yrs old. It seemed much easier to just state (My Dogs) then to type a lengthy explanation about my co-worker his dog and our attempt to bread them.
We are not attempting to become professional breeders, make a profit, or in any way corrupt or compromise the breed. We just have several family members on both sides that would like a nice dog as a pet.
I can see how the conclusion could have been made by the way I opened the conversation so for that please accept my apology.
Lynne you are obviously very careful on giving advice if it may be detrimental to the dogs and thank you for asking the question and not jumping to conclusions.
Randy I hope that your bad day dream is over soon hate to see you get stuck there all day and Angela to answer your question yes her hips have been cleared through my vet and the breeder she was purchased from via X-rays but they are not O.F.A.
She has no titles because I live in a very rural area and the nearest Schutzhund club is 3 + hours away. They are German Imports with exceptional blood lines. Even though they might not have titles they are champions in my home and in my heart.
I have made a substantial monetary investment into my dogs and even more important the everlasting bonding relationships between us! I have followed Mr. Frawley’s advice / instruction from the day I first thought of becoming a GSD owner. I was determined to be the best responsible dog owner I could be. We waited until we could own some land because I hated the thought of owning large breed dogs in suburbia. Our dogs and I now own five acres of hardwood timbers that they call there own.
I would never do anything to jeopardize the well being of my dogs.
Since this posting I have found the answers to my questions, so with that said thanks but no thanks.
Lynne was just asking a question. It's entirely possible that in the time between postings, the poster has perhaps acquired a different and/or new male dog...which seems to be the case.
As I have said before, and I hate to risk sounding "soft," but maybe if we wait to criticize people until we KNOW THE FACTS OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THEIR INTENTIONS, we could HELP MORE DOGS. You know, kind of a greater good type of thing.
Just tonight on my way home from work, I talked to a total newbie who wants to breed his dog to one of Capri's pups in the future. He's a nice guy who admits he's new to this and doesn't know a whole lot. I guess I could've yelled at him for wanting to breed an untitled male, or refrained from talking to him because I wasn't sure what he wanted to do was in the dogs' best interest, but instead I talked to him for a while and explained a few things that he was happy to know, things that will positively affect his dogs in the future. I told him I would be happy to help him gather info/come up w/a gameplan if this is really something he wants to do, and make sure it's done right.
If no one is willing to listen and help, what are people supposed to do? What they WILL do is get upset, not listen, and go do as they please, whether they have the knowledge to do so or not, and that certainly will NOT help any dogs.
Doesn't it make more sense to hear someone out, ask questions, and THEN pass judgement and give advice?
If she is no longer accepting the male, then she is probably bred by now or she is past that stage of estrus and not likely to get pregnant.
If she did take ...
Step #1 is to have a backup plan for placing the puppies when the "interested relatives" decide they didn't want a pup after all. Happens more often than you would think.
Step #2 is start building an emergency fund so if something goes wrong with the whelping you can get her treated. Having to let her die because a vet refused treatment without payment would be sad.
Step #3 is to get Leerburg's whelping puppes video -- I hear it's pretty good.
