Thrombocytopenia.
I've been on the web most of the day and don't like what I'm finding about this.
We went to a derm specialist 6-6-09 for skin problems, and were given simplecef
and fluconazole for fungus and bacterial infection.
After about a week and a half of being on these meds, my 2 yr. old German
Shorthair Pointer started acting lethargic, off her food, diarrhea.
I thought it was the the heat and meds.
Went to the vet yesterday. She's anemic, and her thrombocytes are VERY low.
That "big" scary word was the possible diagnosis.
We came home with meds: Vit. K, iron, pepcid, sucralfate.
He will do another cbc Mon. and hopes her red count is on the upswing.
The studies on the net I'm finding are 25-30 yrs old.I found some on this site through the search.
Sorry to sound so disjointed, but I am.
Does anybody have any experience with this?
Did they think the meds could have caused the problem or did they think it was from the infection itself? I imagine it could be anything from something transient and fairly benign to something very bad.
At this point they don't know. I originally went Thurs, her platelet count was 89,( it should be at least 175) and came home with the meds.
Fri afternoon her gums were looking more pale.
Took her in, they did cbc, her platelets were about 30 points lower.
Wrong direction!
So now she's on high dose prednisone.
Vet said fluconazole has been known to have this reaction in humans, but never in
dogs.
It is so strange because I'm having a hard time keeping her settled down.
She doesn't know she's sick. It sounds so freaking serious.
I've never had to deal with anything like this or know anyone who has.
I am so sorry to hear it. It does sound pretty serious. I wonder if she has ITP. I am not sure how they prove that. I will keep my fingers crossed for the prednisone to work.
