Any training ideas on how to stop a pup exiting from a crate like a full speed torpedo as soon as the door is opened. For some reason "Stay" only seems to work until the door is opened!
If a dog flies out of the crate when I open the door I slam the door right back in his face - I teach it that opening the crate is not an invitation to bolt. They have to sit and wait until I tell them to come out - then they get a treat. But if they bolt they get slammed (HARD IF NEED BE) I usually only have to slam then 3 or 4 times very quickly. Most of the time it requires a BAM BAM BAM !!! in the nose for a dog to get a grip on whats going on. Once this is done a few times they quickly learn that they they need to wait.
I am sure there are softer, kinder, slower, less reliable ways to do this but who cares.
Also you can snap your leash onto the crate door so that when you step back away from the crate, you can still slam it shut if the dog tries to get out. This small thing makes life alot easier and safer for the dog. If he bolts out of the crate and onto the street, he could be history.
No, Erin. I am paranoid... I should have specified though his problem isn't so much being a torpedo as it is digging and pushing the crate open, both things I do not like and will not reward by letting the dog out.
I am a mean mommy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
My dog does the claw and whine also.
I think this is called "crate drive" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
He is silent until he knows I am coming to release him then he can't help himself. But he does not run out. I say "wait" stand in front of the open door with his leash and attach it to his collar.
When I thought about responding, I wondered about whether this is a safety issue, thats why I asked if you had a collar on your pup.
For my 18 mo, with hormones kicking in, I think the danger of him running out of the crate is higher than getting the collar caught, but with a pup I'm not so sure.
Anyway, the "wait" command works for me. I use it in front of any door. Maybe you can teach that with a collar in the house and try to apply it to the crate door <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
