I think you can train an older dog to do protection work, and you can certainly train the dog to be protective by barking on command or when people approach your home.
You will have to work a lot harder on actual bite development with an older dog. . .and your progress will totally depend on the dog's ability.
For the other issues, Ed has the perfect tape- Building Drive, Focus, and Grip with Bernhard Flinks.
It wouldn't hurt to have your dog evaluated by someone that knows what they are looking at.
Robert,
He does bark outside, not inside-one problem I also put on the forum today. My dog is so smart and has such a desire to learn, an awesome ball drive, all of which I know are great trates and don't want to waste them. Unfortunately Mom has been slacking and moved his every other day training to once a week, and as a result he no longer "comes" he "runs like hell" but he is also intact. He has never shown any aggression and when he does bark and we tell him enough he instantly stops and starts to wag his tail.
After I get my act together I will have him evaluated. Any other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks,
Dee
