Hopefully someone has some experience with this - it's my pup's first health issue.
I noticed Baron limping tonight after I let him out of the crate and saw that he wasn't putting much pressure on his left hind leg. He was not limping at all earlier today. When I checked it out I noticed the front of one of his pads has been worn down raw. If you're looking directly at the bottom of his foot, it would be the almost hidden top part of his metatarsal pad (not the surface), abutting the middle two digital pads. It's not bleeding, but a round section of padding slightly smaller than a dime is missing and it's red. When I touch it he doesn't really react, but if I put a little bit of pressure he does.
How does this one relatively unexposed area get worn down while the others look fine? Is it from walking/exercising on pavement or did he more likely gnaw it off? Does it grow back? What should I do in the meantime?
The toes themselves could have worn it a little, he could have had something caught in there, he could have stepped on a leash that was moving and gotten a rope burn... Who knows...
Assuming it was not an anatomical anomaly (and you likely would have seen a problem before now if it were) it will heal quickly on its own.
You can put some liquid bandage on it if you want, but I would caution against anything that will keep it moist; damp paws can wear faster and become more injured. A booty may rub other spots also, so unless there is an active infection, I would leave them off.
Pads are more likely to wear down and cause these types of injuries on indoor dogs that are not used to running on rough surfaces, so if this is the case, build up slowly...
I took it with us to S. Dakota the last 2 weeks, because my dog was traveling with us as we rode horses through the black hills over some pretty rough terrain.
