I just got a 88 pound male GSD very trainable rescue dog yesterday. He has not had time to mark any territory. He is very smart.
QUESTION:
I have a 10 by 50 foot area in my fenced yard that is "forest like". I would like to train my dog to pee and defecate in this area rather then on the grass.
Is there anything in the Leeburg library regarding this or do you have some suggestions?
Back to basics. Take him there on a leash after getting him out of his crate (I am hoping/assuming he has a crate), wait til he does his business in that area, and make a big deal out of it.
Then, I would maybe try playing w/him in the other area of the yard. Keep doing this and he should get it pretty quickly. If you're playing w/him in the yard and he starts showing signs of looking for a place to potty, take him over to the forest area and when/if he goes, throw him a party. Try to make a noticeable differentiation between the two areas in his mind. Make a big deal out of it. You'll sound like an idiot, but that's ok. You could give him a treat or something, also, as soon as he pees/poops in the correct area. The more he does it over there, the more ingrained it will become.

We did the same thing. We have an area where we want the dogs to go so the lawns stay looking good. The leash is the key so that you control him going only in that area over and over. Now he doesn't even want to go anywhere else because that place is 'marked' as his place! You just have to be patient!
We have a 25' by 25' area in the corner of our yard filled with pea gravel and bounded by rail road ties. We began taking Hans there on a leash to do his business when he was a puppy. Every time he had to go, we took him out there on a leash. Finally, one day, we were playing fetch and he dropped the ball and ran over to his area and did his thing.
People are amazed that we have a big dog and a nice lawn in the backyard. You can walk around my yard barefoot and blindfolded and unless you wander onto the pea gravel you aren't going to step in anything yucky.
So do what the others suggested, take him to his area on a leash every single time he has to go. Eventually he will figure it out.
One word of warning. Keep the area clean. We scoop the pea gravel once a week. If his area gets too smelly and gross he will start looking for someplace else to go.
