To relieve a hijack on a cat-chasing thread:
Connie,
Think the vibrating pager function on an e collar would be of use to you? You could train him to look at you with the vibration, and then you could give him his command with sign. And you wouldn't have to be worried about him hearing you. He'd feel you and turn to look.
A little off the wall perhaps but maybe worth a try.
Randy

I was thinking about that too, Randy. I've never tried it, so I wasn't sure. It does seem like it's well worth a try since he is so young and appears to be going deaf pretty rapidly (no, no ear infection).
Does it just jiggle his neck, like the name indicates?

Mine is just kind of a hum of a vibration.
I wouldn't think it'd have to be tight around the neck or even have the contact prongs on it for that matter because they'd be of no use for the application.
You could marker train him to look at you at a vibr. And it'd be the only thing it'd mean to him....... Look at me.

OK. You have resolved all my hesitation points. This is a super-soft dog who lives for training. Loves marker work.
I have this: http://leerburg.com/280ncp.htm
I just looked on the back and it does indeed say that it includes "non-stim pager/vibration" !

I think all the better Dogtras have this. Get the smallest one you can for the sake of the receiver size. If you're not using it for correction, you really don't want to lug it around. I use the 202...for one dog that would be the 200. I just keep it around my neck for when I don't feel like raising my voice to be heard.
Nevermind...misread where you said you already HAVE the 280.

FWIW, deafness is prevalent in my breed (the Catahoula, due to the merle gene). The dogs are either born deaf or can become deaf later on. We get a lot of deaf dogs in rescue and using vibration mode on e-collars is very popular with owners of deaf dogs.
I had a dog that was deaf for the last 5-6 years of her life. It came on slowly; at first you could make a loud clap to get her attention. In the future I would definitely use one of those collars. Don't worry about using it on your dog!
As a bonus, you can even recall your dog out of a sleep (useful if you can't find him, LOL).

This will be my third deaf dog, so I'm sorry I didn't know/think about this before.
This was my experience before: "It came on slowly; at first you could make a loud clap to get her attention."
But a pager jiggle will be so much better!
Gonna read the booklet tonight and work on the teaching ("look at me when your neck is jiggled") this weekend.
It's nice to see that the collar is pretty much infinite sizes.

I think you will love it. I like to use it at the crack of dawn when I'm out feeding my horses and everyone else in the neighborhood is asleep. I can call Simon to me w/out making any noise at all and alerting the neighbor's moronic dogs. He likes to wander on the property in the morning and with this I don't have to yell when it's time to head in.
I think you will also be surprised at how easily he/she will come to you w/the pager; I didn't really have to train it. I push the button, and the dog shows up. The first few times they show up w/a quizzical "Mom, what the hell is this thing DOING?" look. ;-)

This brings back some funny, but bitter sweet memories. Our son Adam lost his hearing at about 1 1/2 due to medication for a potentially fatal infection. (Adam was born with SCID - Severe Combined Immune Dificiency aka "the boy in the bubble" disease). Needless to say, it was extremely devestating when we learned of Adam's hearing loss. My family, in thier own sick way of trying to keep us smiling through the rough times, presented us with a nerf ball gun with foam darts - so that we could "get Adam's attention" from across the room. It was never used for that purpose, but we did have a lot of fun with that silly gun. THANK GOD they didn't know about e-collars!! LOL!

I suspect too that it will take about 1 minute to teach him, once I figure out the apparatus.
And as you say, even if I did not, he would definitely look up from whatever he was sniffing and look around, at which point I could give the hand-gesture recall.
But I want to do it perfectly. He's youngish, and he could live lots of years in safety if I do this right.
