I guess I'm looking for ideas....I'm a little impatient for the lab results...and maybe someone has seen this before. My vet and others he has brought in for consult are unsure though one of the derm lab specialists said it sounded like epithelitis which I can't even find existing in dogs. It should be able to be diagnosed from the lab sample.
No bacteria in the exudate, right? But you said you woke up to purulent exudate that smelled bad? Or was it just blood/meat smell? That tested no bacteria too?
Have lung x-rays happened yet? Is the vet thinking immune-mediated?

The only case I've seen near this was in a dog undergoing cancer treatment. I wish I could remember the type of cancer but it was a number of years ago.
The Washington State University has an excellent vet school that does take patients from the general public. You've had a lot done so you might consider contacting them or getting a referral for a review.

No bacteria anywhere. The smell was blood and meat but like I was in the middle of a slaughter house; it was overwhelming. He did have a chest xray. His films looked normal.
My vet is leaning towards autoimmune too. I thought epithelitis was a human disease but my thought is the presentation is similar....Lupus?
I'm lucky to be in relatively close proximity to Tufts Vet School but until his labs come back; I can't go anywhere. The Vet has already mentioned he'd refer me to a specialist if he knew which one Thor needs I have that going for me, I do feel his care has been thorough and concerned. The vet feels bad that Thor has gotten worse under his care no ego or excuses just a desire for Thor to get better.
Some of the results might be in tomorrow. I hate being in limbo; I feel like I'm wasting time.
OH Man, I hated looking at those. I am so sorry for you and Thor. I have seen a lot of lesions, but nothing like what you have described...the slaughterhouse was particularly effective...and should be helpful to the diagnosis when you receive it.
