Sigh.....
I have come to the conclusion that I need some proffesional help whipping Yote into shape!
I know I am capable of raising happy well behaved dogs but he is just really a challenge, and I think that I need some outside perspective. He has come so far but I am tired of him being a pain in the butt so much of the time.
Agility would be great if he could even be off leash, but sadly that is not the case, especially around other dogs.
There is a shutzhound club in my town but I'm not sure if that is the route I want to go, I am considering it though as I think it might suit his personality quite well.
Regular group obedience is not going to work with him either.
If anyone has any suggestions or if anyone knows any good trainers in my neck of the woods that would be awesome.
Mainly I think it might challenge him more and maybe wear him out a little...he is a lot of dog and I think he needs more mental stimulation to help keep him out of trouble.
He is so very smart that I think taking his obedience training further would be worthwhile.
The problem is that I don't want to take a typical group obedience type class due to his wanting to eat the other dogs and the distraction level. I also need to be able to use a prong to keep him under control right now and most of the training places here won't allow that.
The other thing is maybe consulting a pro about the aggression towards Loki, to see if we can take it down a notch or two so that I can have them together on leash and supervised without him going into attack mode.
Okay. Now we are getting to some specifics. Once you have that, you can begin to make decisions.
Hambone actually began in a PetCo situation. But the guy training believed in prong collars, and nothing for free.
He also was very aware of Hambone's preference for fighting.
We did some good work, got some problems resolved and the rest of the help came from Leerburg.
I did luck out with Nick at PetCo. Most would be not worth working with.
What kind of job do you see Yote doing and what kind of job do you think he is capable of? (two completely different questions) Maybe Tracking? I think he could be good at that. Convoluted trails in your backyard, buried loot he has to find, stuff in the house he has to find and bring before he gets treats, something like that?
what i did, I started with a piece of goody in my hand and dragged it across the floor. Hambone followed it, got it, and good boy. Gradually I increased the distance and hid it. He was put on the scent, found it, and got the goody. I took him out side and pretty much did the same thing until he could follow a steady track, a track that had pieces missing, a track that left the ground and rubbed on bushes (used a drag line for that) until he could smell hanna's clothes, be put to find, and find her.
That's a sloppy way to do it, videos from Leerburg I covet!
"training a competition tracking dog" might be good DVD.
