I keep a leash on Suzzie pretty much all the time. We've bought 5 leashes so far. The first was Ed's 20' cotton line and that lasted a while. I simultaneously had two other 5' nylon leashes. I'd have the leash clipped to my belt and me working at my desk. I'd be disturbed from concentration with a smack, smack, smack sound and find she'd chewed the leash in two (or three). I know I shouldn't tolerate her chewing the leash and it really frustrates me. I don't know how to break this habit. I'd love to have a nice leather leash or even the buddy system tether, but I know as soon as I spend the money she'll chew it up.
Jason, how long have you had your leather leash? Do you keep it on your dog all the time? Suzzie goes for a long time without chewing on the leash and then she'll go in spurts where she'll chew several up. I'd love a nice leather leash, but I don't want to drop the $$ to leave it on her all the time if it'll only last a month or so.
In the mean time (since she's chewed everything but the last 20' cotton line I have), I just got some 1/4" nylon/plastic rope (bright yellow!) and back-braided a handle and back braided the clip from the last leash onto it. I have about 25' of the stuff sitting around. I guess I'll keep making new leashes out of that until I can train her to "leave it".
I'd also accept suggestions on how to train "leave it" on the leash.
Only a month. I don't leave her tied to it but I did when we went camping... a longer cable got wrapped around everything. She is doing good with "outting" it when we walk to though. I just used a lot of treats for that. I bet you could get that trained pretty quick.
