I have pretty much decided that once Dozer has finished off this bag of kibble, we are switching to raw. I have begun to plan and find places to get his food from. Most times I see fish included in menus, it's makrel or sardines. I live on a lake and can catch bluegill, catfish and carp by the boat loads (we C&R all bass and trout)....are these fish just as good or not so much?
If they were good, I thought Id feed the bluegill whole but slit its gut, the cats and carp are usually 6+ lbs so I thought Id cut them in half or thirds and freeze what wasn't fed that day for the following week.
Is that OK or should I just stick with the mackrel and sardines? If these are ok, should they be frozen to be sure they don't have parasites first?
I can't answer and wonder the same. I have fed whole tilapia when I have got it under $1/lb and fed a bunch of old freezer burned Striper that a guy gave me. No ill effects. Although last time my Mal played with his but did not eat. About time to try again as I have another 10 lbs or so left
I have fed trout, whole sardines, halibut and grayling to my dogs with no ill effects. I do open the fish up up and check for hooks in their bellies but other than that I give them the whole fish including the head. I have one large breed, two medium breed and one small breed. Even the small one (15lbs) can manage larger sardines (approx 1lb) and my largest girl can finish a decent size trout off by herself.
Where I live we do not have mercury advisories so I would be very careful about checking into whether you do or not. Otherwise the only fish I have heard you are not supposed to feed raw is salmon. It carries a parasite that can cause extreme illness and may be fatal.
