Now I use both when I train, depending on what I'm doing. now on another forum people are claiming that using either is negotiating with your dog and you don't earn the dog's respect? There are people there who claim to train for agility and obedience and don't use either, they state that their praise is good enough for their dog. From what I've seen from the average dog, they must be the best trainers in the world. I've seen a few exceptions like Border Collies working sheep, where the work is reward enough for them.
I'm just slightly puzzled on how this would work on an on-going basis.
they're full of Ol' Roy dog food, I'd ask them to post some youtube vid demonstrating the praise only training, If I were to guess, if they got the dog to do anything it was compulsion based and the praise was the marker "you won't get beat this time"
I have one dog who works for me because I ask her to. She is a Border Collie and really lives to please and eats up praise. Several things I just showed her what I wanted and she did it - don't ask me how or why. It took about 3 minutes each to teach her to "crawl" and "spin" the only reward being a yes and gooood girl. It's not uncommon in the BC breed as they were bred to be highly intuitive to people and have a strong desire to work with them - they do find the job in itself rewarding.
But it's definately not something I'd expect from most dogs, BCs included. My other BC very much wants to know whats in it for him - he learns quick and likes to train, but he loves his food and toy rewards - clicker training has worked great with him! I want my dog to really enjoy training with me and food and toys sure make it an enjoyable time for him!
I've worked a lot of dogs without rewards other than praise. Most of the time the dog is enthusiastic with the praise because they're happy you stopped pronging them :-P
Nothing wrong with using toys and food. Some people are just misguided.
If both works, then use both. I switched to marker training and use lots of treats and get better and quicker results than using lots of corrections. One of my dogs has figured out to heel and he'll get a click and a treat. Before, even using a prong collar, I wasn't getting him to heel very well. Now I can walk the length of a block and he stays right with me. Who says rewards don't work?
