Can a rough playing dog (I beleive its just rough play)ever be tamed to learn to play calmly? I know Jim will probably say no. How can some dogs play calmly play and others not?
in my limited experience, some can, mine can't. I don't have clue on how to get dogs to "play nice" with with each other, only with me.
just my limited education observation, dog's "play" to establish rank and create a pack bound. They make a game of it, and games have winners and losers. when you have two high drive ranky dogs they will not tolerate losing and will escalate to a full blown fight and often will not quit until one is dead and in a confined area there is no "run away" option

probably not, and if you do let them play you have to watch them constantly for aggression cues that are hard to detect sometimes or the dog can go over the top in a flash.
It is hard for me to see his ear movments(he is a shi tzu and has his long hair on the ears), if it is showing calm submision. So i'll just be on the safe side and not let him play with other dogs.

Yeah,
If ears are the only clue you know, keep them separated.
I agree.
It's a common mistake that people make thinking ALL dogs need to play. It's not true. Depending on the type of dog, some are hard wired to a point that play is nearly impossible without escalating to something else.
If I have to constantly monitor two dogs playing then I'll just forget about it and do something with them myself to wear em out.
