Hi I was recently attacked by a rottweiler and although I will be fine it has led me to thinking about how when Im out on walks I have no means of protecting myself or my dogs really. I bought dog spray(pepper spray and bear spray isnt legal here) but have read that it can antagonize the dog, making it worse. I have 3 dogs so carrying a walking stick wouldnt work. What can I use that would work best? Any ideas would be much appreciated.
old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown
I would not trust that dog spray stuff. I guess it just depends on what is legal where you live. There are some on the forum who carry expandable aluminum batons. That and the illegal pepper spray are my first two thoughts.
A can of Wasp and Hornet Spray....it's foamy and sticks to most surfaces and will spray 15-20 feet! Aim for the eyes and nose. I carry a can in my truck along with several other tools used for self protection.

My friend who is a K9 cop says that tazers (not the kind that fly out of the gun, just the smaller ones that the voltage goes between the 2 posts) are a good thing to carry. He said just the sound of the electricity scares a lot of dogs into backing up at least. I'm thinking about going that route.
I still just can not wrap my mind around living in a place that makes it illegal to use the correct tool to protect yourself in a possible deadly situation..
A government that prevents a law abiding citizen from owning the tools to protect themselves.....I would feel like a slave, and I can't understand why people don't move to a place that puts liberty first, instead of control.

Hi, I actually spoke to a Post Office employee a while back about this issue- she told me the sprays were not effective. There is a citronella spray as well as a k9 pepper spray.
I did hear about one thing that works, a cattle prod, I would just double check that it would not harm a dog... it doesn't harm a cow but they are 800 lbs.
I don't think an asp baton would work well.
Lastly, an umbrella can sometimes help if you have nothing else, opening it in the dogs face can give surprise and also block them to keep them at bay, but that depends on the dog.
Yes I've held one, but I was thinking it depends on your strength, too? I don't know how strong the OP is or how tough or fast the Rotty might be. And I wouldn't want to injure or split the dogs head open, I think a shock with a cattle prod, like on their tongue or body would work best, but I've never used one personally
